The 2012 IHSA Girls Bowling State Finals will take place at Cherry Bowl Lanes in Rockford on Friday and Saturday, February 10-11. The 2012 tournament marks the 40th annual edition of the tourney and the 20th straight year that Cherry Bowl Lanes will serve as the host.

The bar continues to be raised for girl’s high school bowling in Illinois, as the 2011 state finals saw the team champion set a state-record for total team pinfall for the fifth consecutive year, while O’Fallon’s Natalie Goodman also set a new state mark (2,867) en route to individual state champion honors.

Harlem High School in Machesney Park won its fifth team state title a year ago and tallied the second-best Sectional total in the state this season with a pinfall of 6,154. Three members of the squad who helped contribute to last year’s record-setting total of 12,533 return this season, including senior Sammi Hagerman and junior Lindsey Anderson, who placed sixth and seventh, respectively, in the individual standings a year ago.

2010 team state champ Collinsville looks ready to be a factor in the team standings again after the Kahoks knocked down the fourth-most pins (6,018) of any team in the state at Sectionals this season. Junior Amber Burns bowled two games on the state championship winning team two years ago, averaging a 194.5, and has since grown into the team leader, winning individual honors (1,326) at the Taylorville Sectional last week.

Six of the teams who finished in the Top 12 in the state last year failed to qualify for the team field this season, leaving room for several other returning teams to move up the leaderboard and bring home hardware in 2012. Minooka, who placed ninth last season, tops that list after posting a state-best Sectional score of 6,182 this year. The Indians are led by senior Courtney Johnston, who placed in the Top 25 individually at state a year ago, and Joliet West Sectional champion Emily Koulis (1,309), a sophomore.

Four other Top 12 teams from a year ago return this season, including Antioch (7th), Hoffman Estates (8th), Sterling (11th) and DeKalb (12th). The Barbs from DeKalb return all but one member of last year’s state team and used that experience to post a Top 10 Sectional score this year with 5,830 pins.

Meanwhile, Leyden was one of four teams in the state this year that posted a Sectional pinfall of 6,000 pins or more (6,018) and should be a factor this weekend behind sophomore Reba Hall, who was a 2012 Sectional champion with a pinfall of 1,454.

The record-setting Goodman has graduated, as did many of the individual medal winners from last year’s state meet. Elk Grove Village senior Tedra Tado is the top returnee from a year ago, as she placed fifth in 2011 with a score of 2,590. Herrin senior Taylor Chaney placed 17th a year ago, 46 pins off the All-State mark, and will look to move into the Top 12 in 2012.

Oswego East junior Giselle Poss trailed only the aforementioned Hall and Anderson among individual Sectional scorers in the state this year, as Poss tallied a pinfall of 1,355. Vernon Hills senior Taylor Rigwood was one of six individuals in the state who scored 1,300 pins or better in Sectionals, as her score of 1,346 earned her the Antioch Sectional crown.
