The 2019 IHSA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals are set to take place inside New Trier High School’s Natatorium on Friday and Saturday, February 22-23.

The prelims and finals of every event will be webcast live with full video and audio with a subscription on the NFHS Network at IHSA.tv, as Skyler King from PrepAquatics.com brings viewers all the action. King highlights some of the top storylines and swimmers entering the weekend in the preview below, followed by a review of last year’s champions, top Sectional performers in 2018 and how their marks stack up against the state and national records:

The 2019 state meet at New Trier shapes up as a historic one for a historic swimming community. St. Charles was the state’s dominant program from the late 70’s to the late 90’s, winning 10 state titles and leaving just four state meets without a trophy from 1979-1999. Since St. Charles North opened in 2001, there hasn’t been a trophy for either district school.

The North Stars enter the state finals not just as a favorite for the state title, but for their first trophy in school history. St. Charles North is led by University of Iowa bound Will Myhre, the number one seed and favorite in both the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Breaststroke, who after three runner-up finishes to current state record holder Charlie Scheinfeld (New Trier) should be a record he takes for his own.
Other trophy contenders include Stevenson, led by Topher Stensby, who is looking for state titles number four and five in the 50 and 100 Freestyle this weekend before heading to the University of Notre Dame in the fall.

Glenbrook South is already a favorite for next year’s state title and won’t be satisfied without some hardware this year despite the fact that of their 15 individual qualifiers, 14 will return next year. They have gotten a huge boost from sophomore distance stud Sami Moussally, who is the meet’s top seed in the 500.

Hinsdale Central is led by University of North bound sprinter Donovan Lahmann, who is making the move from the 200 to the 50 for the first time and hopes to lead the Red Devils to a seventh consecutive trophy.

Other state title contenders include Loyola Junior Luke Maurer (200 Free, 100 Free), whose father Erik set a state record in the 200 free in 1989 for the Ramblers. Fenwick’s Liam Hutchinson (200 Free, 500 Free), who will join Stensby in South Bend next year, and Waubonsie Valley Junior Aayush Deshpande (200 IM, 100 Fly) who will look to become only the third individual state champion in program history. That list is led off by his head coach Chris Hagenbaumer, who took the state breaststroke crown in 1989 for the Warriors.
