IHSA To Host Special Olympics Illinois Athletes At Unified State Basketball Tournament

In conjunction with the 2022 IHSA Boys Basketball State Finals at the State Farm Center on the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana, the IHSA will also hold a Unified Basketball Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 11-12. Find more info on the tournament below:

WHO: Eight teams comprised of Special Olympics Illinois athletes and Unified partners: Andrew High School, Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School (BBCHS), Edwardsville High School, Hoffman Estates High School, Limestone Community High School, North Boone School District 200, Pontiac High School, and St. Patrick’s Vaughn High School; View rosters here.

WHAT:  IHSA Unified State Basketball is one of 13 state sports competitions. It is the championship level competition for those participating in high school Unified basketball at Unified Champion Schools and IHSA member schools. Teams qualify for this event by winning regional tournaments held across the state. IHSA Unified State Basketball is held in conjunction with the IHSA Boys State Basketball tournament. Unified basketball first became an official Special Olympics Illinois sport in 2016.

WHY: The Unified Champion Schools (UCS) Strategy works to further develop inclusive learning and social environments for all students, with and without disabilities. By utilizing the three key components of Unified sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole school engagement, schools can elevate the inclusion and unification among their students as well as further social emotional learning for all.
