On February 24, 2017, Luther North College Prep in Chicago announced that the school would be ceasing its operations and closing for good at the conclusion of the 2016-17 school year.

The school was in its 64th year, but noted that its enrollment had dropped from over 1,400 students in the 1960's to 170 student today. Nine of those 170 students, along with head coach David Grim and assistant coach John Franklin, made a last, and lasting memory for the high school at the 2017 IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals at Eastern Illinois University's O'Brien Field.

The Wildcats came together to win the Class 1A IHSA State Championship on May 20, 2017, the first in school history in any sport, accumulating 59 team points to edge runner-up Warrensburg-Latham.

The nine Luther North state qualifiers included Kayla Armstrong, Natasha Bernett, Cameron Boone, Michelle Diaz, Rebecca Everett, Charlotte LaFleur, Alana Santos, Leah Uteg, and Jada Williams.

The Wildcats were state champions in three events, including Williams, Bernett, Boone and Armstrong combining to win the 4x100-Meter Relay.

Bernett earned another 10 points for her team by winning the state title 300-Meter Low Hurdles, and also added five points in both the Triple Jump and 100-Meter High Hurdles by placing fifth in each.

Armstrong rounded out the Luther North state champions by winning the 400-Meter Dash.

Armstrong and Williams both qualified for the Wildcats in two additional events, as they combined for 19 total points in the 100-Meter Dash and 200-Meter Dash. Armstrong was second in the 100 and fourth in the 200, while Williams finished eighth and seventh in the events, respectively.
