History was made at the 2017 IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Evanston High School, as New Trier (above) was crowned the first-ever IHSA Combined Team State Champion in Girls Swimming & Diving, and the second overall in IHSA history following Glenbard West’s 2016 girls track & field team.

Combined team state champions are determined by taking the traditional IHSA state final scoring system and combining it with the points earned by their school’s wheelchair student-athletes.
There are threshold participant numbers that have to be met in each sport in order for the combined championship to be contested, and with nine athletes with disabilities competing at Evanston High School, Girls Swimming & Diving realized their first combined state championship.

The Trevians tallied 109 points to win the state title, while Sandburg finished second with 19 points, and Glenbard West third with 15 points.

The nine student-athletes whose participation helped create history were New Trier’s Sela Cornell, Sandburg’s Rachael Apter, Maine East’s Anabelle Delgadillo, Rochelle’s Aubrey Headon, Lake Forest’s Ana Kohout, Glenbard West’s Ahalya Lettenberger, Mundelein’s MacKenzie Strong, Lake Forest’s Julia Tanna and Jones’ Sophia Vilim.
