IHSA Schools Approve 3 of 4 Proposals

Three out of the four proposals on the ballot in the annual Illinois High School Association (IHSA) member school referendum were approved in voting by the membership last month. The online ballots were tabulated and certified in the IHSA Office Thursday (Jan. 8).  All the by-law changes take effect on July 1, 2009.

By a vote of 336-78, the membership amended By-laws 5.051, 5.251, 5.261, 5.291 and 5.301 to move the date of the first contest in boys cross country, girls cross country, girls swimming, girls tennis, and girls volleyball to Monday of Week 8, one week earlier than the current by-law.

The membership approved by a 334-57 margin a change to By-laws 5.122 and 5.252 that changes the team contest limitation in girls swimming & diving and boys swimming & diving from 14 meets to 14 dates and the individual contest limitation in these sports from 17 meets to 17 dates.

Schools voted 332-56 to amend By-law 5.172 to add two dates to the girls badminton season, raising the limit from 16 to 18.

Finally, one amendment proposal was rejected by the membership. By a vote of 197-218, schools rejected a change to By-law 3.170 that would have allowed schools affected by the 1.65 enrollment multiplier to petition for a waiver under a policy established by the Board of Directors.

The complete listing of all 14 original proposals can be found by clicking here.

A total of 415 of 777 member schools (53.4%) participated in the amendment vote.
