The 2017 IHSA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals are set to take place inside New Trier High School’s Natatorium on Friday and Saturday, February 24-25.

The prelims and finals of every swimming event, and the diving finals, will be webcast live with full video and audio with a subscription on the NFHS Network at IHSA.tv, as Skyler King from PrepAquatics.com brings viewers all the action. King highlights some of the top storylines and swimmers entering the weekend in the preview below, followed by a review of last year’s champions, top Sectional performers in 2017 and how their marks stack up against the state and national records:

Entering the state finals, Lyons Township has a strong shot at a repeat state championship, as the Lyons did very little at Sectionals to jeopardize maximizing their state performance. Led by juniors Henry Claesson (200 free and 100 free) and Spencer Walker (500 free and 100 backstroke, also the coaches son) and Cincinnati bound senior Ryan Hammond (50 free), Lyons will be tough to beat. Most likely to challenge is conference rival Hinsdale Central, led by Georgia Tech bound senior Franco Reyes. Reyes is the two-time defending 100 butterfly champ and is the favorite to win the 50 free as well. Reyes has an excellent sprint free supporting cast led by sophomore Donovan Lahmann (200 free and 100 free) that gives them a great chance to defend their state titles in the Medley and 200 Free Relays. Host school New Trier could return to the Top 3 for the first time in four years (when they capped a run of state titles from 2011-2013) and are led by a star-studded junior class with Ryan (200 IM and 100 Free) and Patrick Gridley (200 IM and 100 backstroke), as well as defending state breaststroke champion Charlie Scheinfeld who will also swim the 100 free. Dark horse trophy teams include St. Charles East in head coach Joe Cabel’s final season and Stevenson looking for their first trophy since a runner-up finish in 2004.
Top Performers:
-Peoria Notre Dame junior Colton Paulson-200 free and defending his state title in the 500 free
-Glenbrook South senior and Arizona bound Sam Iida-200 IM (look for a state record) and 500 free
-St. Charles North sophomore Will Myhre-200 IM and 100 Breaststroke
-Wheaton Academy Senior and Alabama bound Tyler Sesvold-100 Butterfly and 100 Backstroke
