The 2011 IHSA Boys & Girls Cross Country State Finals are set for Saturday, November 5 and will mark the 66th annual season of the boy’s state finals and the 33rd of the girl’s state meet. All six races will unfold over the three-mile course at Detweiller Park in Peoria, which is hosting the event for the 42nd consecutive year. The fifth-year of the three-class state championship series will be documented on IHSA.tv, which will release highlights of the races on the website in the days following the meet.

1A GIRLS
Winnebago won five consecutive team state championships from 2005-2009, before St. Teresa took the torch with the school’s first team title in girl’s cross country a year ago. With four runners returning who finished 23rd or better from last year’s squad, the Bulldogs could be building a dynasty of their own.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2010 State Meet: St. Teresa (1st); Elmwood (2nd); St. Joseph-Ogden (3rd); Westmont (4th); Freeburg (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Kristen Busch, Freeburg (1st); Caitlin Busch, Freeburg (4th); Ellen Devereux, St. Teresa (5th); Kalla Gold, Eureka (6th); Alex Van Hoof, Bloomington Central Catholic (7th); Rachel Brune, Elmwood (8th); Chelsea Blaase, St. Joseph-Ogden (9th); Rachel Devereux, St. Teresa (10th)

Defending Class 1A state champion Beecher returns three of its runners who scored in last year’s meet, including junior Grant Nykaza, the top individual returnee in the class who placed fourth individually last year with a time of 15:02.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Beecher (1st); Monticello (3rd); Elmwood (4th); Ottawa Marquette (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Grant Nykaza, Beecher (4th); Steve Schroeder, Monticello (5th); Derrick Johnson, Bureau Valley (9th); Blake Hale, Robinson (10th)
Top 2011 Sectional Team: Sparta (36 points at St. Teresa Sectional)
Top 2011 Sectional Individual: Steve Schroeder, Monticello (14:55 at St. Teresa Sectional)

2A GIRLS
Peoria Notre Dame edged Yorkville 113-130 to win the school’s first cross country state championship in 2010. Notre Dame returns standout Jessie Wynn in 2011, but should be pushed by an experienced Yorkville squad that returns all seven of its participants from the 2010 state meet.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Peoria Notre Dame (1st); Yorkville (2nd); Springfield (3rd); Dixon (4th); Crystal Lake Central (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Kirby Hale, Springfield (3rd); Jessie Wynn, Peoria Notre Dame (4th); Cassie Kruse, Hampshire (8th); Katie Adams, Marengo (9th); Ali Hester, Yorkville (10th)
Top 2011 Sectional Team: Montini (30 points at Nazareth Sectional)
Top 2011 Sectional Individual: Kirby Hale, Springfield (17:28 at MacArthur Sectional)

2A BOYS
In 2010, Belvidere North ran away with its second consecutive team state title literally and figuratively, as the Blue Thunder scored 28 points, 125-point difference between runner-up Springfield. With 2010 individual runner-up Tyler Yunk as one of three returnees, Belvidere North could become the fifth program in state history to win three straight team titles.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Belvidere North (1st); Springfield (2nd); Marmion Academy (T3rd); Normal University (T3rd); Crystal Lake Central (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Michael Clevenger, MacArthur (1st); Tyler Yunk, Belvidere North (2nd); Garrett Lee, Belvidere North (5th); Paxson Menard, Belvidere North (7th); Clint Kliem, Burlington Central (10th)
Top 2011 Sectional Team: Glenbard South (38 points at Nazareth Sectional)
Top 2011 Sectional Individual: Michael Clevenger, McArthur (14:41 at MacArthur Sectional)

3A GIRLS
The graduation losses of Schaumburg’s top three finishers from last year’s state championship squad will make it tough for the Saxons to become the second repeat champ ever in the class. That opens the door for a Wheaton Warrenville South team that placed third last year and returns the top six finishers from that squad.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Schaumburg (1st); Palatine (2nd); Wheaton Warrenville South (3rd); Prospect (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Ariel Michalek, Oswego East (1st); Jill Hardies, Hinsdale Central (2nd); Brooke Wolfe, Prospect (5th); Kaylee Flanagan, Lake Park (9th); Rebecca Batliner, Barrington (10th)
Top 2011 Sectional Team: O’Fallon (32 points at Quincy Sectional)
Top 2011 Sectional Individual: Amanda Fox, Naperville Central (16:57 at Naperville North Sectional)

3A BOYS
The York dynasty continued in 2010, as the program won its 26th team state championship, a state-record for any sport. The Dukes return a pair of runners from last year’s squad, while the graduation losses of 22 of the Top 30 individual finishers from last year’s meet should make for a wide open 2011 field.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2010 State Meet: York (1st); Lake Zurich (2nd); Neuqua Valley (3rd); Palatine (4th); O’Fallon (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2010 State Meet: Malachy Schrobilgen, Oak Park-River Forest (5th); Erik Peterson, Barrington (6th)
Top 2011 Sectional Team: O’Fallon (31 points at Quincy Sectional)
Top 2011 Sectional Individual: Leland Later, New Trier (14:34 at York Sectional)
