The Central Suburban League recently conducted a conference-wide sportsmanship initiative challenging students to produce videos chronicling sportsmanship at their respective schools.

New Trier High School Assistant Athletic Director Deb Ofcky recalled how the idea came to be:

“About a year and a half ago I was asked to Chair the CSL Sportsmanship Committee. I was honored to have been asked and decided I didn’t want to sit back believing the CSL was doing a good job and we didn’t need to do anything else. So I began by looking up the definition of Sportsmanship:

Sportsmanship is a demonstration of generosity and genuine concern for others. It is a concrete measure of the understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity.

It prompted me to think about how we could promote and emphasize the importance of GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP. The word above that kept coming back to me was 'demonstrate', how could we SHOW good sportsmanship? Naturally I thought about the kids and what they love to do….video, Facebook, YouTube, etc. So I presented the video idea to the committee. Our goal was to use the videos to actually SHOW Good Sportsmanship throughout our schools."
