As a part of the IHSA Do What’s Right! Sportsmanship Program, member school personnel and licensed IHSA officials have the ability to recognize acts of exemplary sportsmanship and integrity that occur in IHSA events throughout the school year via the Sport A Winning Attitude Report (SAWA). Those who are recognized receive a special certificate from the IHSA and select SAWAs are featured here on the IHSAState website.

The SAWA Report below on Lincoln-Way West High School softball coaches Amanda Grigsby and Lauren Hickey (right) was submitted by an IHSA official who officiated a recent game:

"Lincoln-Way West recently played a game and from the beginning of the contest, it was obvious that the skill level of the opponent was no match for that of Lincoln-Way West. Lincoln-Way West avoided humiliating their opponent by not running up the score. They accomplished this by not advancing on wild pitches or past balls with runners on base after they were ahead by more than 10 runs.

Additionally, Coaches Grigsby and Hickey held their base runners to a one base advance, even when extra base hits could have resulted in a multiple base advancement. Both Coach Grisgby and Coach Hickey would yell encouragement and applaud good plays made by their opponent, including a line drive to third base where their opponent's third baseman made a nice play. Both coaches had their team hold back without making a travesty of the game or embarrassing their opponent, while maintaining a high level of morale for both teams. They displayed outstanding sportsmanship and I feel they exceeded the mission set forth in IHSA athletics."
