Boys Class AA Track & Field State Final Champion Quotes
Class AA Team Champion: South Holland (Thornwood) (78 pts.), Coach Gary Haupert: "Two of our seniors missed graduation today for this. They will have a separate graduation for them on Monday. We knew that winning today would not be easy. You take a gamble and put some guys in open races. It was a calculated risk in the 200 and 400 hundred. We wound up getting 18 points from those two races. Friday is by far the hardest day. You have to live through the trials. Once you make it to Saturday, you know they are going to score points. We knew the long jump after yesterday was pretty good. The 4x100 we were seeded first and we had four solid guys running. Keith Hawkins was seeded third in the 110 meter high hurdles and for him to pull off a win was a big surprise. I have to but faith in the kids because they know how they are feeling better then I do."
Long Jump: Leslie Majors, Jr. – South Holland (Thornwood) "I had to get the big jump early so I could get this out of the way and run my two relays later today. I was trying for the record this year, so it will be my goal next year."
Pole Vault: John Adamczyk, Jr. – Palatine (Fremd) "I knew I could win. I had the potential technique wise. My strategy was to find openings in the wind and since it was at my back, it didn't really bother me."
High Jump: Mike Petrone, Sr. – Carbondale "I've never cleared 7 feet but at least I won. I really didn't worry about the wind. I got second and I hate losing so this is great."
Shot Put: Scott Block, Sr. - Roselle (Lake Park) "I felt great this weekend. This was my best throw. It's the state final so it was do or die."
Triple Jump: Steve Daniel, Sr. - Decatur (MacArthur) "I hurt my hamstring last week and today I was really sore. I took one jump and that was it. I just wanted to come out and see what I could do and I was able to work through it."
Discus: Adam Schroeder, Sr. Rockford (Boylan) "I was a little disappointed with my throws today. I think I tried adjusting too much for the wind. I thought Cody Roberts, Normal (Community) would come back and get yesterdays mark. I was expecting a dual between the two of us today. This is a heck of a way to go out. A good lasting memory of high school."
4x800 Meter Relay: Charleston - Erik Werden, Sr. "This is unbelievable. We knew it was going to be a tactical race. I would have never expected to win state."
4x100 Meter Relay: South Holland (Thornwood)
Floyd Davis, Jr. – "I've always loved track and I have been excited about this season since indoor track. I knew we could do it. I just always make myself stay confident, strong and picture us winning."
Jeremy Johnson, Jr. – Feels really good to have this victory. Last night we felt a little nervous, but today we felt good."
Leslie Majors, Jr. – I was really nervous last night and I tried to get rid of it by joking around. Today my coach talked to me and gave me inspiration."
3200-Meter Run: Stephen Pifer, Sr. - Edwardsville (H.S.) "I felt great during the early laps. It was hard to try and hold back, but I knew I had to be patient. I was going to wait until the final couple laps to take off, but around the third lap I kicked in. I had good first mile split."
110-Meter High Hurdles: Keith Hawkins, Jr. – South Holland (Thornwood) "I just ran my best and that's all you can give. I think I just got it with the dip."
100-Meter Dash: Charles Howell, Sr. – Plainfield (H.S.) "I felt great today. I just kept thinking about how hard I have trained for this. My teammates and the other great competitors made everyone run faster."
800-Meter Run: Jeremy Kruidenier, Sr. – Champaign (Central) "It feels really good. It hasn't hit me yet, I'm sure I will feel even better once I'm on the stands. I've been thinking about winning for weeks. When I got here, I tried to settle down by watching the other races. I didn't know if anyone was close until after I crossed the line. I knew I wasn't going to break any records, so I just wanted to finish strong."
4x200 Meter Relay: Tinley Park (Andrew)
Matt Vasquez (Sr.) – "The start felt really good. Running into the wind was bad but we weren't really thinking about it."
Ryan Schnase, Jr. – "We owe it all to our coach. We listened to what he said and he made us champs."
Dave Dobersztyn, Jr. – "We were doubted in sectionals and know one here really knew who we were."
400-Meter Dash & 200-Meter Dash: Jeremy Johnson, Jr. – South Holland (Thornwood) "Everyday I just expect to do my best. My body hurts, but it's over for now. The team did a great job all season and especially today. There's always room for improvement, but right now I feel pretty good."
300-Meter Intermediate Hurdles: Brad Thornton, Sr. – Cary (C.-Grove) "My start felt real good. I knew I had to start strong, then once I was off the first hurdle I had to power through the rest. It was nice having the wind coming at you because then once you are on the home stretch, you have it to your back. I did not know that I had that big of a lead. The coaches always say we should just go out and run your own race. I used my 9th place finish in the 110 hurdles as motivation. This is unbelievable to end my senior year like this."
1600-Meter Run: Stephen Pifer, Sr. – Edwardsville (H.S.) "it feels great and it's an awesome feeling to bring home a triple crown. You have to be very lucky to do all three (including Cross Country). I can't think of a better way to go out."
4x400 Meter Relay: Park Ridge (Maine South)
Chuck DiFranco, Sr. – "I felt really good out of the blocks. I haven't lost all year. We had a lot of confidence coming in with the windy conditions, I knew I would have an edge going in. I thought of it as something to help me."
Kenny Johnson, Sr. – "We practiced our handoffs earlier, so that paid off. I kind of enjoy running in lane 9. I have a real strong kick, so as soon as I hit the 200 mark, I started to pull away."
Neil Sherlock, Sr. – "The guy from Rock Island scared the heck out of me when he passed me, but I took back the lead at the curve. We get Tony the baton in first and expect him to hold on to it. I think our 4x400 team has gone through a lot over the years. We've been together a long time and it feels great to win."
Tony Marcinek, Sr. – "The handoff was fine. Neil passed that guy and actually everyone ran well. I thought I came back ok after running the quarter. I was disappointed I didn't PR in the 400 and pole vault, but this is an awesome way to end it."
