IHSA 2001 Class AA Boys Basketball Semifinal Game #2

Notes & Quotes
2001 IHSA Class AA BOYS STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT
Saturday afternoon, March 17, 2001 Carver Arena, Peoria
America's Original March Madness Semifinal Game 5

QUOTES AND NOTES

Winning coach: Kevin Hayhurst, South Holland (Thornwood) - ``First of all, when we were down by 10 in the third quarter the kids understood what we had to do. We didn't play individual basketball but we stayed within the confines of team basketball and I think that was the key to us moving into the championship game."

"Once we got back into the game we had enough left to get back in our two-two-one press and I think a little bit of our pressure took away quite a bit of their aggressiveness. We're not a great defensive team because we don't have a lot of depth but our defense was decent enough to where we wore them down. (Quinnel) Brown is a phenomenal basketball player and when he gets the ball in his hands and gets up ahead of steam there isn't a whole lot that is going to stop him."

"We were in a tough situation being 10 points down but they believed all along they were going to win the basketball game."

"We're just happy and we knew that every game down here we'd be facing a quality team and Morgan Park was just one of those. We kept our heads and didn't lose our focus, which I think was one of the keys to us winning the basketball game. We knew Morgan Park was a great basketball team by just looking at the teams they had to go through to get down here. Yes, you can say we dodged the bullet but in a tournament situation like this you have to expect one of those games is going to come along now and then."

Losing coach: Herbert Ray, Chicago (Morgan Park) - ``I think we probably played the best game this year. Unfortunately in the end things didn't come out the way we planned them."

"We planned on fronting the big guy with weak side help, pressure their guards which we were very successful in the first half and had a nice little six point lead. Unfortunately in the second half, things didn't go our way."

"We took some bad shots when we had a nice little lead and we also didn't finish on a few shots and kind of let their three point man get loose on us and make a few shots."

"It was a tough loss, a very tough loss. I'm very proud of my guys because a lot of people didn't believe our kids would be down here, wouldn't even make it out of the city but we did."

"I felt all along that we'd win the state championship. I was here to win it, not to be a runner-up or anything. That's what we talked to our team about. Plan to win, don't get in the formula of playing not to loose, play to win. Feel good about yourself, make sure you've left everything out there on the court."

(On their last shot) "Are you talking about the first, second or third time? The third time we didn't get the one I wanted but the other two we made."

(On what he told the team when they were 10 up) "I just told them to play hard, its not over."
