The 2020 IHSA Boys Bowling State Finals will unfold on Friday and Saturday, January 29February 1 at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon.

Defending state champion Harlem welcomes back three athletes who bowled 2,283 or better at last year’s state meet, including a pair of Top 10 individual returnees in seniors Ethan Pash (2,739, 4th in 2019) and Josh Roth (2,642, 10th). Last year’s state championship was the second in program history for the Huskies, who also paced the field in 2017.

Minooka earned its first state trophy in program history a year ago, when the Indians finished as the runner-up to Harlem. Sophomores Efrain Soto (2,710, 5th) and Brandon Caruso (2,479, 35th) had strong state debuts last year as freshmen, and were big reasons Minooka scored the highest Sectional pinfall (6,529) in the state last week en route to a Sectional crown.

Not only did last year’s third place finish mark the first trophy in Joliet West’s program history, it also came from seemingly nowhere considering the Tigers had never recorded a Top 10 state finish previously. That history making team was chock full of juniors, so with four scoring players from last year returning, including senior Lucas Pirc (2,581, T17th), Joliet West will have its sights set on another trophy in 2020.

If the Sectional scores carryover to the State Final round, there could be some new blood in the hunt for hardware this weekend. Aside from Minooka, none of the three other Sectional team champs in 2020 qualified for day two of the state tourney a year ago, as Vernon Hills (6,450), Glenbard East Coop (6,339) and Herrin (6,298) all ranked among the top eight team pinfall scores in the state at Sectionals. Senior Tyler Dunfee (2,489, 34th) leads Herrin after a strong showing at state last year, while Vernon Hills senior Jacob Gates (1,459) and Glenbard East Coop senior Kyle Bailey (1,400) were both individual Sectional champs on Saturday as well.

St. Charles East finished just outside trophy territory last year, finishing fourth as a team, but Edgar Burgos captured the individual state title by 39 pins with a score of 2,868 for the Saints. In winning the individual crown, Burgos became the first freshman to do since 2006 and the second overall in state history.

Hononegah and Richards are teams to keep an eye on after placing sixth and ninth, respectively, a year ago at state. Both followed with Top 5 Sectional team scores this season (Hononegah 3rd with 6,443 & Richards 5th with 6,399), as sophomore Danny LaBonte (1,320) was one of three Richards bowlers to roll 1,309 or better at Sectionals. Hononegah won two state titles and finished second twice from 2015-2018, so junior Cameron Tyler (1,432) and company will be looking to get the perennial power back into trophy contention.

Plainfield Central junior Chris Bienvenu (1,407) and Lebanon junior William Nordmann (1,372) are individual qualifiers to watch on the scoreboard this weekend, after each won individual Sectional titles last week. Meanwhile, Waukegan senior Diego Cortez is back after finishing in the Top 10 individually a year ago (2,678, 6th).

Lake Park's Brett Richter will be the lone competitor in the Wheelchair Division in 2020, as the sopohmore will be looking to improve on his six-game total of 827 from a year ago.
