Richards High School (Oak Lawn) freshman wrestler Mia Palumbo made history on Thursday (February 15, 2018) at the State Farm Center, where she became the first female wrestler in IHSA history to win a match in the state final meet.

Wrestling in the 106-pound weight division in Class 2A, Palumbo trailed 2-0 for most of her first-round match, before rallying for a 4-2 victory. She now advances to Friday's quarterfinals.

Palumbo was a Sectional champion a week ago and entered the state finals with a 28-3 record. Three other female wrestlers have previously qualified for the state meet, including Dunbar’s Quiovany Santos, who had fallen in her Class 1A match at 106 pounds earlier in the afternoon.
