On November 27, 2015, the Wendell Phillips Academy football team made history for the city of Chicago when the school captured the IHSA Class 4A Football state title at Northern Illinois University's Huskie Stadium in DeKalb.
Phillips completed its perfect 14-0 season with a 51-7 victory over Althoff Catholic (Belleville) (watch the game here on NFHS Network)
to become the first Chicago Public Schools (CPS) high school to win an IHSA football state title.
The IHSA Football Playoffs and title games debuted in 1974, and Robeson High School made the Class 5A championship in 1982 to mark the first appearance by a CPS school. Robeson was edged 16-12 by Guilford that day, which marked the last state final football appearance by a CPS school until 2014.
