|The 2014 IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Finals will take place at Palatine High School in Palatine on Friday and Saturday, February 21-22. The 2014 state final meet marks the 38th season that a State Series will be contested in girl’s gymnastics and the 36th consecutive year that Palatine High School will serve as the host.
IHSA.tv will be there to document all the action and will have highlights from the tournament posted on the website in the days that follow.
Friday’s action will determine an individual All-Around champion and factor into the team scoring. On Saturday, individual state champions will be crowned in the Vault, Uneven Parallel Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Friday’s prelims will determine the Top 10 competitors in each event that move on to Saturday’s finals. Team points are accumulated on Friday, but competitors can add to their team total on Saturday with a higher scoring routine.
A year ago, Lyons trailed Prairie Ridge after Friday’s prelims, but improved several Saturday scores to edge Prairie Ridge for the state title (149.625-149.300). The state title was the first in Lyons’ school history and ended Carmel’s run of three consecutive state championships. Six of the Top 8 teams from a year ago return in 2014, including the entire Top 5, as Fremd (3rd), New Trier (4th) and Geneva (5th) followed Lyons and Prairie Ridge, respectively. Barrington and Prospect are the newcomers to the 2014 team field, as Prospect makes its first state final appearance and Barrington qualifies for the first time since 2002.
A senior has captured the All-Around title in four consecutive seasons, but that trend could change in 2014 after two current juniors tied for second-place last year in Prairie Ridge’s Rachel Underwood and Lyons’ Kelsy Kurfirst. Kurfirst is the defending state champion in the Floor Exercise as well, while the only other defending state champ in the field is Stevenson’s Alyssa Weisberg, who won the Balance Beam as a sophomore in 2013.
