The IHSA will crown its inaugural state champions in Competitive Dance this weekend at U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington. The IHSA’s newest state final features three classes (1A, 2A, 3A) and debuts with Prelims on Friday, January 25 and the finals on Saturday, January 26. Friday’s prelims will feature 91 total teams (30 in 1A & 3A, 31 in 2A due to tie) and the Top 10 teams in each class will move on to perform again on Saturday in the finals. Every performance will be streamed live on IHSA.tv (www.IHSA.tv), and available to be viewed any time on-demand after the conclusion of the event.

A primer on the IHSA’s newest coed sport:
-241 teams initially entered to participate this season and 207 competed in the State Series. 64 teams competed in Class 1A, 69 team competed in Class 2A and 74 teams competed in Class 3A.
-Rosters have a maximum of 28 team members. A team can have as many as 24 dancers on the floor for a performance and must have at least five dancers on the floor to perform.
-Performances must be at least one minute and 45 seconds in length, but can be no longer than three minutes.
-The general performance area for Competitive Dance is a standard high school basketball court. The floor for the state finals will be a Marley Floor that measures 80 feet long and 50 feet wide.
-The IHSA utilizes a unique open format, which provides one routine where all genres and styles compete against one other. For example, teams competing this weekend will include dance styles such as pom, kick, lyrical, jazz, hip hop and hybrids combining multiple styles.
-Judges use the same rubric to judge all teams, rating each performance on technique, synchronization & musicality, choreography, formations, transitions and overall effect.
-Each performance is judged by six judges. Five judges watch from the judging panel directly in front of the performance area, including a Head Judge, and one Technical Judge will be adjacent to the panel on the floor.
-Andrew, Fieldcrest, Grayslake North, Palatine and Triad were the five Sectional hosts this year. Three of the Sectionals each had one field in each class. Triad’s Sectional had two 1A fields and no 3A field. Palatine had two 3A fields and no 1A field.
-Six teams per class advanced to the state finals from each Sectional (six per field in Sectionals which had multiple fields in the same class). A tie at the Andrew Sectional between Oak Lawn and TF South led to 31 teams qualifying in Class 2A.
-The largest school to qualify for the state finals is Warren in Gurnee (4,444) and the smallest is St. Anthony in Effingham (189).
-Antioch (2A) is the northernmost school in the state to participate this season
-Carterville (1A) is the southernmost school in the state to participate this season
-Quincy Notre Dame (1A) is the westernmost school in the state to participate this season
-Thornton Fractional South (2A) is the easternmost school in the state to participate this season
