Boy's bowling enters its second decade as an IHSA state final sport when the 2013 IHSA Boys Bowling State Finals are contested at St. Clair Bowl in O’Fallon on Friday and Saturday, January 25-26. O’Fallon High School will once again serve as the host at St. Clair’s 50-lane layout, a role the school and bowling house have served in for all 11 years of the tournament.

The 2013 tournament also marks the first time that a Wheelchair Class will be contested at the state tournament. Zack Bundy of Biggsville West Central and Mascoutah’s Fletcher Hopkins will represent their respective schools in the inaugural event, which will unfold on Saturday.

IHSA.tv will be there to document all the action and will have highlights from the tournament posted on the website in the days that follow.

Only four teams from the 2012 field return in 2013, with defending champ Andrew High School being joined by a pair of Top 5 finishers from a year ago, including runner-up Vernon Hills, O’Fallon (4th) and Lake Park (7th).

Andrew is the only program in the history of the tournament to win back-to-back state titles after accomplishing the feat in 2005 and 2006. The Thunderbolts added a third state championship last year and will try to repeat for the second time in program history. The team's top two scorers from a year ago have graduated, but senior Kyle Krol returns with state final experience after placing in the Top 25 in the state individually last year (24th, 2,537).

Vernon Hills came up 270 pins shy of a state title a year ago to finish as the runner-up for the second consecutive season, but like Andrew, most of last year’s squad has graduated. The exception is senior Eric Swanson, who tallied a pinfall of 2,579 to place 18th in the state in 2012, and followed that up by winning the individual crown at last week’s Sectional with a score of 1,370.

O’Fallon vies for its first championship in program history behind the return of their top three bowlers from a year ago. Junior Billy Godman placed 11th in the state individually last year (2,644), while senior Tommy Frost took individual honors this year at the Cahokia Sectional, helping the Panthers record the second highest Sectional pinfall in the state (6,559). However, the Panthers greatest challenge could come from conference foe Belleville East, who took the team title at the Cahokia Sectional behind the state’s highest Sectional score (6,561). In addition, 2011 state champ Guilford returns to the field after a one-year hiatus behind individual Sectional champ Trustin Givens (1,443).

Among individual qualifiers, Mascoutah senior Anthony Betcher is the top returnee from a year ago when he placed 14th with a score of 2,632, while Herrin junior Austin Carey (22nd, 2,548), Brooks junior Jose Ledesma (23rd, 2,538) and Lincoln-Way East senior Brandon Nathan (25th, 2,534) all look poised to move up the individual leaderboard in 2013 after Top 25 finishes last year.
