Illinois Loses A Legendary Coach in Wayne McClain

Bookmark and Share

The state of Illinois and the IHSA lost a legendary figure and coach when Wayne McClain passed away on October 15, 2014.

McClain (above right with son Sergio) was the long-time coach at Peoria Manual High School, where he helped the Rams win a then unprecedented four consecutive IHSA Boys Basketball State Championships from 1994-1997. McClain was an assistant coach on the 1994 squad and the head coach of the final three title teams.

He left Manual in 2002 to join Bill Self's coaching staff at the University of Illinois, where he remained until 2012. In 2013, Wayne returned to the high school sidelines at Champaign Central High School, where he promptly led the Maroons to a Regional crown and Sectional final appearance in his first season on the bench.

Both Wayne and Sergio were named among the 100 Legends of March Madness, as a part of a celebration of the IHSA's state basketball tournament turning 100 years old in 2007.
