IHSA Board Takes Action On Two Items At December Meeting

The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Board of Directors met for its regularly scheduled meeting at the IHSA office in Bloomington on Monday, December 11, 2023, where the Board approved two action items.


ACTION ITEMS
1. The Board approved a recommendation to accept the IHSA’s annual audit as it was presented by members of the accounting firm, Striegel Knobloch & Company, LLC. The audit can be reviewed by clicking here.

2. The Board approved a recommendation to update Section 5 in the IHSA Board Policy to include the following language:  
“Athletic teams shall be eligible to participate in IHSA state series competition provided they are in compliance with the season and contest limitations in Section 5.”


APPEALS & ELIGIBILITY RULINGS
1. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from St. Rita in Chicago. The student was ruled ineligible for non-compliance with IHSA By-law 3.030.

2. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Central Catholic High School in Bloomington. The student was ruled ineligible to compete in the 2024 IHSA Girls Golf State Series after not participating on Day 2 of the 2023 IHSA Girls Golf State Finals. 

3. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Central Catholic High School in Bloomington. The student was ruled ineligible to compete in the 2024 IHSA Girls Golf State Series after not participating on Day 2 of the 2023 IHSA Girls Golf State Finals.  

4. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Metro-East Lutheran in Edwardsville. The student was granted limited eligibility until June, 2024, but was seeking full varsity eligibility.

5. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Curie High School in Chicago. The student was granted limited eligibility until March, 2024, but was seeking full varsity eligibility.

6. The Board sustained the Executive Director’s ruling on a student from Rockford Christian High School. The student was granted limited eligibility until June, 2024, but was seeking full varsity eligibility.


DISCUSSION ITEMS
At each meeting of the Board of Directors, there are certain items the Board discusses, but upon which no action is taken. The following is a report of those items from the December 11, 2023, agenda:

1. The Board offered their condolences to the family and friends of Henry “Hank” Sundeen, who passed away on December 7, 2023. Hank worked behind the scenes as a volunteer at a multitude of IHSA State Final events through the years.

2. The Board discussed Sub-Sectional seeding in girls volleyball and State Series seeding in general in all IHSA sports.

3. The Board discussed the IHSA Legislative Commission process, all-school ballot voting thresholds, and the football district proposal.

4. The Board heard a report the IHSA is seeking additional candidates to be recognized as a part of the IHSA Teacher Spotlight program presented by COUNTRY Financial. School personnel can nominate teachers/coaches here.

5. The Board heard a report on the upcoming Lets Connect meeting being hosted by the IHSA in Rosemont in early January.
