The 2020 IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Finals will be contested on February 21-22 at Palatine High School (click here to listen to the history of PHS hosting state gymnastics).

Friday’s action will determine an individual All-Around champion and factor into the team scoring. On Saturday, individual state champions will be crowned in the Vault, Uneven Parallel Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Friday’s prelims will determine the Top 10 competitors in each event that move on to Saturday’s finals. Team points are accumulated on Friday, but competitors can add to their team total on Saturday with a higher scoring routine.

The graduation of Glenbard West star Maddie Diab makes for a wide-open edition of 2020 state meet, as Diab captured the Vault, Balance Beam and All-Around individual state titles a year ago en route to leading the Hilltoppers to their second consecutive team state championship. While Glenbard West won’t compete for a team title this season, younger sister Anna Diab returns for her junior season at West, and enters as an All-Around Sectional champion, along with winning three events at Sectionals (Parallel Bars, Balance Beam, Floor Exercise).

In addition to Glenbard West’s absence in the team field, five other Top 10 teams from a year did not qualify for the team portion, creating opportunities for some perennial powers, as well as some newcomers, to try to reach the podium.

New Trier was second in the team standings a year ago, earning the school’s first trophy since 1993, and third trophy overall. If the Trevians are going to rise to the top of team standings in 2020, it will need a big weekend from senior Maeve Murdock, an All-Around Regional champ.

Carmel could be poised to win its first state trophy since 2016. The Corsairs feature three Sectional champions in Isabella Kropiwiec (Floor Exercise, Vault), Clare Keane (Parallel Bars) and Lyndsey Basara (Balance Beam). The Corsairs hope to return to their dominant form from last decade when they won three straight titles from 2010-2012.

Glenbard East qualified for the team field for the first-time in school history a year ago, and after placing seventh, returns in 2020 hoping to make more history by bringing home the program’s first trophy. Senior Kelsey Donovan, a Sectional Vault champion, could be the key to helping the Rams reach the next level.

After an amazing stretch that saw the program win state trophies every season from 2012-2018, including three straight titles from 2015-2017, Prairie Ridge Coop was not a part of the team tourney in 2019. The Wolves are back and could start a new trophy streak with Gabriella Riley leading the way. Riley was an All-Around Sectional champ in addition to winning the Parallel Bars and Floor Exercise at Sectionals.

Thanks in part to the effort of junior Kayla Bailey, a winner of the Sectional Vault and Balance Beam events, Lake Zurich is in the team field this weekend and vying for the first Top 8 team state finish in school history.

Meanwhile, 12-time state champ Fremd returns to the state field after a three-year hiatus with a balanced roster that saw three individuals win event titles at Regionals.

Mundelein is back as well and in search of its first Top 8 finish since 1982, while Downers Grove is qualifying for the first time as a coop between its North and South campuses. Both programs were state regulars in 1980’s and 90’s, but South’s eighth-place finish in 2016 was the first appearance by either prior to 1993.
