The 2019 IHSA Boys Bowling State Finals will unfold on Friday and Saturday, January 25-26 at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon.

Hononegah captured the 2018 IHSA Boys Bowling team state championship behind the play of individual state champ Nick Sommer and a senior laden team that like Sommer, has now graduated. But don’t write the Indians repeat bid off just yet, as this program has a history of reloading, having won two state titles along with two runner-up finishes in the past four years. The 2019 Indians are led by sophomore Cameron Tyler (1,259) and senior Jacob Sommer (1,239) at Sectionals.

Lincoln-Way Central looks to be in prime position to make a run at its first state title. Third a year ago, the Knights tallied the state’s second best Sectional score (6,445) over the weekend and are led by junior Alex Nolan, who tied for 25th place at state last year (2,494).

Meanwhile, sister school Lincoln-Way West was just six pins off the Knights Sectional pace with a 6,439 pinfall, as junior Cameron Jablonski led the way (1,393) for the Warriors.

Four of the past five team champs have come from the Rockford area, and 2017 champion Harlem hopes to make it five of six. The Huskies own five straight Top 10 state final finishes and are led by senior Josh Roth, who rolled a 2,520 at state last year to place 22nd.

Seven of the Top 10 teams from the 2018 state meet are back in the field again this year, but only one, eight-place finisher St. Charles North, won a Sectional title this year. The North Stars are led by senior Blake Miller, one of two Top 10 individual finishers from the 2018 state tourney who are back this year. Miller was 10th a year ago with a score of 2,635.

The other three Sectional team champions include Minooka, who tallied the best Sectional team score in the state with a 6,630 pinfall, Columbia (6,299) and St. Patrick (6,026). Minooka is paced by senior Drew Toke who placed 33rd in the state a year ago (2,459), while junior Josh Baumstark (1,314) and senior Nathan Bostick (1,289) lead Columbia and St. Patrick, respectively.

Seventh a year ago, Lake Zurich is a team to watch with the return of pair of Top 30 players from 2018 in senior Trevor Madura (9th, 2,641) and senior Billy Schroeder (T30th, 2,476).

Lake Park is another Top 10 (6th in 2018) team back in the field with its top player returning. Jordan Fischer placed 16th with a pinfall of 2,550 last year as a junior. The Lancers also have the lone competitor in the Wheelchair Division this year, as freshman Brett Richter will represent Lake Park on Saturday.

Collinsville returned to the Top 10 last year (10th) after a three-year hiatus and could make a run at its first trophy since 2003 behind the play of sophomore Ethan Gardner, who shared individual Sectional honors with Roxana senior Christian Bertoletti after both bowled a 1,382.

Bertoletti helped roll the Shells team to the state tourney, as did fellow individual Sectional champ Matt LaBonte, a Richards freshman who tallied the state’s best individual Sectional score (1,499). LaBonte and his teammates also managed the fourth-best Sectional tally in the state at 6,393.

Led by senior Evan Pleshar (1,450) and junior Lucas Pirc (1,301), respectively, Lockport (6,277) and Joliet West (6,262) are not your standard fifth- and sixth-place Sectional finishers, as the two squads were two of nine Sectional teams in the state to bowl 6,262 or higher.

Oregon senior Austin Strite (1,398) and Payton junior Jonathan Powell (1,330) are names to watch on the individual leaderboard, as the two Individual Sectional title winners both advanced to state as individuals.
