The 2018 IHSA Boys Swimming & Diving State Finals are set to take place inside Evanston Township High School’s Natatorium on Friday and Saturday, February 23-24.

The prelims and finals of every event will be webcast live with full video and audio with a subscription on the NFHS Network at IHSA.tv, as Skyler King from PrepAquatics.com brings viewers all the action. King highlights some of the top storylines and swimmers entering the weekend in the preview below, followed by a review of last year’s champions, top Sectional performers in 2018 and how their marks stack up against the state and national records:

When the state meet begins Friday in Evanston, Lyons Township will look to become just the seventh school in the nearly 90-year history of the meet to win three consecutive state titles. Led by a strong senior class, Lyons possesses two of the potential senior swimmer of the year candidates in Virginia Tech bound Henry Clausen, along with coaches son and Alabama commit Spencer Walker.

The Lions enter as the favorites, but swimming royalty will be looking to knock them off, as New Trier with their own decorated group of seniors, including future Texas Longhorn Charlie Scheinfeld, who seeking his own three peat in the 100 Breaststroke. The Gridley twins, Ryan and Patrick, are both heading to Northwestern next year and combined with Scheinfeld and sophomore Pearce Bailey, set the fastest time in state history in the Medley Relay at Sectionals.

The third trophy favorite is Hinsdale Central, who is working on bringing home a trophy for the sixth year in a row. The Red Devils are led by senior Cole Grosshans and junior Donovan Lahmann, who will be the key cogs in the defense of their 200-Free Relay state title.

Dark-horse contender Stevenson has defending 50-Freestyle champ junior Topher Stensby leading the way. The Patriots have plenty of talent, but only Stensby has scored individually at state before.

Some of the other Individual title contenders include Louisville pledge Colton Paulson from Peoria Notre Dame, who is looking for a third win in the 200-Freestyle and a bounce-back second state title in the 500 after finishing second last year. Michael Balcerak from St. Viator is the number one seed in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly after winning the 100 Freestyle last year, flexing the versatility that he will take to the University of Cincinnati next fall. St. Charles North junior Will Myhre will be a force in both the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke after two runner-up finishes a year ago, as well as having the fastest breaststroke time in the meet the last two years. St. Ignatius Freshman Parker Nolan represents a unique case as the number one seed in both the 50- and the 100-Freestyle. He is just the third freshman in the last 20 years to enter this weekend as the top seed in any event and joins Richwoods alum Matt Elliott as the only two to be the top seed in two events. Records that could fall this weekend, aside from the aforementioned Medley Relay, include the 50 Freestyle with Topher Stensby competing, Spencer Walker in the 100 Backstroke and the much-anticipated showdown between Will Myhre and Charlie Scheinfeld in the 100 Breaststroke.
