Veteran high school sports reporter Marty Maciaszek was honored with his IHSA Distinguished Media Service Award on Friday, December 7, 2018, at Wheeling High School following the varsity girls basketball contest against visiting Hersey High School.

Marty received his award from Wheeling Assistant Principal Dr. Steve May and Hersey Assistant Principal John Novak, who had each independently nominated Marty for the award. The pair also presented Marty with a gift on behalf of the Mid-Suburban League Conference, as each school provided a school shirt.

Marty made his foray into preps working for the Peoria Journal Star, and went on to become a Chicagoland high school sports staple during his time at the Chicago Tribune and Daily Herald from 1990 to 2012. Marty took a job outside of the media at that point, but has remained involved in the scene as a high school stringer for several publications.
