The 2017 IHSA Girls Swimming & Diving State Finals are set to take place inside New Trier High School’s Natatorium on Friday and Saturday, November 17-18.

The prelims and finals of every swimming event, and the diving prelims and finals, will be webcast live with full video and audio with a subscription on the NFHS Network, as Skyler King from PrepAquatics.com brings viewers all the action.

King highlights some of the top storylines and swimmers entering the weekend in the preview below, followed by a review of last year’s champions, top Sectional performers in 2017 and how their marks stack up against the state and national records:

Two-time defending team state champion Rosary enters as a favorite to hoist its third straight IHSA state title, which would be the seventh in program history after the Beads won four straight from 2006-2009. Oswego East (3rd in 2016) and St. Charles North (8th in 2016) appear to be among the top contenders to push Rosary, while upstart Normal Community is a trophy contender behind Grace Ariola, who is enjoying a dominant senior campaign. The University of Texas bound Ariola has record-setting potential in the 50 freestyle, while on the other end of the spectrum we have what shapes up as one of the best statewide freshman classes in recent memory pushing the veterans. The field includes several returning state champions this year beginning with Urbana University senior and Cal recruit Ema Rajic, who set the state record in both the 200 IM and the 100 Breaststroke last year. Oswego East senior Georgia White is headed to Ohio State next year, but not before she takes on stiff competition to defend her state titles in the 100 and 200 Freestyle.

Oak Park junior Natalie Ungaretti is back to defend her 50 Freestyle title, where she will battle a field that will include Ariola, as well as Oswego East sophomore Grace Cooper. Last, but not least, Rosary senior Camryn Streid is back to defend her 100 Butterfly title against a group of competitors that includes her junior teammate Kathryn Mueller, as well as Dunlap senior Emma Theobald, who has posted times this season that would have won state a year ago. Another senior to be on the lookout for is Normal West's Melissa Pish, who is in her first season swimming at the high school level and will be a factor in the 200 and 500 Freestyles. If you are someone that likes to see records fall, this is likely to be your kind of meet. The crowds will be watching the clock in the 200 and 500 Freestyle, the 200 IM and 100 Breaststroke, with potential landmark times in the 400 Freestyle Relay. Olympian Olivia Smoliga holds what may be the two toughest records to break in the 50 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke, but Ariola could threaten.
