The 2017 IHSA Boys and Girls Water Polo State Finals will unfold on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 18-20 at Stevenson High School’s natatorium in Lincolnshire.
The four girls’ quarterfinal matches will take place on Thursday, with the four boys’ quarterfinal matches following on Friday. Saturday will feature all four semifinal matches in the morning. The third-place matches will kickoff the evening session. The girls’ state championship match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, with the boys’ title match to follow immediately afterward. Both state championship matches will air live on the NFHS Network via a CN100 broadcast, which subscribers can watch live on www.IHSA.tv
Stevenson will have both its boys and girls teams playing in the finals at home this weekend, while the fan bases from Fenwick, Naperville Central, New Trier, and St. Ignatius will be making multiple trips to Lincolnshire as well after qualifying both squads. Meanwhile, the Lincoln-Way district is represented in both brackets, as Central qualified for the girls' field, and East in the boys'.
GIRLS PREVIEW
NAPERVILLE CENTRAL REDHAWKS (31-2) vs.
NEW TRIER TREVIANS (20-9)
Naperville Central finds itself in the state finals for the third staright season after finishing second a year ago. Jeff Plackett’s Redhawks have been the state runner-up three times since 2009, and hope to hoist their first state title in school history this weekend behind senior Emily Westlove (115 goals).
New Trier had a 1-6 midseason stretch, but four of those losses came against teams who are still playing this weekend. Matt Wendt’s squad has been tested by its schedule, and like Naperville Central, hopes senior Sara Caywood (123 goals) and company can hoist the school’s first state championship.
PROSPECT KNIGHTS (23-6) vs.
FENWICK FRIARS (254-6-1)
After winning 14 matches in each of her first three seasons at the helm, Prospect head coach Natalie Tucker has the Knights playing in the state finals for the first time in school history. Prospect has been stingy on defense all season with senior Mary Clare McAleer allowing under four goals per match (3.78 gaa.
Legendary Fenwick coach John Wagner added to his legacy a year ago, as Fenwick won its ninth state championship, all of which have come under Wagner. The 2017 squad is led by senior Kelly Frumkin (76 goals) and hopes to become the fourth Friar team to win back-to-back state titles
ST. IGNATIUS WOLFPACK (15-11) vs.
STEVENSON PATRIOTS (31-2)
Don’t be deceived by St. Ignatius’ double-digit losses. Michael Cashman’s team, led by Stephania Lopez (60 goals), has faced a demanding schedule, with eight of its losses coming against state final teams. The Wolfpack won state under Cashman in 2013 and have played for the title on three other occasions.
Jeff Wimer’s Stevenson squad is following last year’s third-place finish with a memorable campaign. The Patriots lone regular-season loss was a one-goal decision to Naperville Central, who they could potentially rematch in the title game. Junior Claire Haas (141 goals) is the top goal-scorer in the tourney.
MOTHER MCAULEY MIGHTY MACS (23-6) vs.
LINCOLN-WAY CENTRAL KNIGHTS (29-4)
Vanessa Carroll has Mother McAuley back in the state finals for the sixth time in seven seasons, and her teams are 4-1 historically in the state quarterfinals. Sophomore Paulina Correa (94) is closing in on 100 goals on the season for a squad that split with Fenwick and lost close matches to Stevenson and Naperville Central this year.
First-year head coach Pam Dettman has Lincoln-Way Central in the state finals for the fourth time in program history and in search of the school’s second trophy. The Knights are led by senior Nicole McCabe (126 goals), who helped Lincoln-Way Central to a 23-game win streak this season.
BOYS PREVIEW
FENWICK FRIARS (24-8) vs.
BARRINGTON BRONCOS (29-3)
Fenwick’s boys’ program looks to add to its state-best total of 10 state championships, as well as win its third under seventh-year head coach Kyle Wagner. Sophomore Payson Comstock (89 goals) and co. will have a chance for revenge, as seven of the Friars eight losses this season have come against state final qualifiers.
Rob Emary has Barrington in the state finals for the second time (2015) in program history, as the Broncos can earn their first-ever trophy if they can knock off perennial power Fenwick in the quarters. Led by senior John Fischer (87 goals), the Broncos have three scoring options with 74 or more goals on the year.
NEW TRIER (31-2) vs.
LYONS LIONS (27-4)
New Trier is back at state in consecutive seasons under third year head coach David Rafferty-Flatter. Senior Henry Yavitt (128 goals) leads a group that could have a chance to avenge its only losses on the season, that is, if a state championship matchup with Stevenson came to fruition.
Lyons makes its third straight state final trip, as the Lions look to win their third state championship under head coach Doug Eichstaedt. Senior Armin Korsos (71 goals) and his teammates have been dominant in the State Series, outscoring their three Sectional opponents 51-12.
STEVENSON PATRIOTS (33-0) vs.
LINCOLN-WAY EAST GRIFFINS (28-3)
Stevenson and head coach Jeff Wimer have finished second three times since 2013, but the stars could be aligning for not only the school’s first championship, but also a perfect season. Senior Andrew Shasin (125 goals) has been one of the catalysts behind the Patriots historic season.
The Griffins have rolled through the season and enter the state finals on a 22-match winning streak. First-year coach Ryan Lodes has the Griffins making their fifth state appearance, while senior Andrew Brozovic (80 goals) hopes to deliver the program’s first-ever quarterfinal victory.
ST. IGNATIUS WOLFPACK (18-13-2) vs.
NAPERVILLE CENTRAL REDHAWKS (27-5)
Another year, another state final trip for St. Ignatius. Luis Martinez has the Wolfpack at state for the fifth consecutive season, where they gone on to finish fourth three times. Senior Andreas Christy (137 goals) is the top scorer entering the tourney and hopes to deliver the school its first state title.
After three previous title match losses, legendary coach Bill Salentine helped Naperville Central achieve its first state championship a year ago. Senior Matt Reagan (62 goals) and the Redhawks are battled-tested, as all five of the team’s losses came against schools playing in the quarters.
