The IHSA Girls Soccer State Finals return to Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on the campus of North Central College in Naperville this weekend, as the Class 2A and Class 3A finals will be contested on Friday and Saturday, June 6-7. The 2014 tournament marks the 27th annual season of the Girls Soccer State Finals, North Central’s 13th consecutive year hosting and the sixth year of the three-class system.

Class 2A opens with emerging power Normal Community West meeting first-time state final qualifier Hinsdale South at 11:00 a.m. Defending 2A state champ Glenwood follows in the second semifinal at 1:00 p.m., when it meets another first-time qualifier in Lake Forest.

The Class 3A semifinals begin at 5:00 p.m. with an interesting semifinal that pits St. Charles East, who won a state-best eight titles back when it was a single school, against upstart Lincoln-Way North, whose program reaches state in its sixth season of existence. Not to be outdone, New Trier and Waubonsie Valley and their combined six state championships close out the Friday action with a regular-season rematch slated to begin at 7:00 p.m.

Every match will be broadcast live on the NFHS Network via www.IHSA.tv

CLASS 2A

NORMAL COMMUNITY WEST WILDCATS (25-1-0) vs.
HINSDALE SOUTH HORNETS (19-6-1)

Normal West makes its third state final appearance in school history and second under seventh-year head coach Val Walker, who led the Wildcats to a third-place state final finish in his first season (2008). Juniors Keely Theobald (55 goals, 17 assists) and Abby Thompson (24 goals, 24 assists) have put up amazing scoring numbers this season, while goalie Natalie Freeman (.63 GAA, 191 saves) and the Wildcat defense have allowed a goal or less in 23 matches this season.
Hinsdale South makes its fourth state final appearance in school history while ending a long qualifying drought, as the Hornets’ three previous trips came consecutively from 1988-1990. First-year head Pat Wolf has led the revival that will result in the first girls’ soccer trophy in school history, as Hinsdale South has cruised through the postseason, outscoring its five opponents 20-1. Forward Cali Vanderplow has netted double-digit goals as a freshman, including the game-winner in the Hornets Super-Sectional win.

GLENWOOD TITANS (16-4-2) vs.
LAKE FOREST SCOUTS (17-6-1)

Head coach Jay Lipe has built one of the top programs in the state at Glenwood, as the Titans are making their seventh overall state final trip, all which have come since 2001. After winning trophies in each of their first five trips, Lipe and the Titans won their first state title a year ago. They return plenty from that team including the junior trio of forward Kelly Graves (20 goals, 11 assists), goalkeeper Mara Cunningham (1.08 GAA) and midfielder Madison Volpert (13 goals).
Ty Stuckslager has won nearly 300 matches since taking over as the head coach at Lake Forest, recording winning records in all but two seasons, and breaks through for the school’s first state final appearance in 2014. Senior goalie Ginnie Revenbaugh (.92 GAA) and the Scout defenders have allowed just one goal in five postseason matches, while sophomore forward Jenny McKendry (12 goals) and senior defender Lucy Edwards (11 goals) have sparked the Scout offense all season long.

CLASS 3A

Lincoln-Way North Phoenix (22-3-1) vs.
St. Charles East Fighting Saints (18-4-5)

Michael Murphy has coached every match in the Lincoln-Way North program’s brief history, which began in 2009, and has the Phoenix in the state finals for the first time in school history. Senior Bethany Dombkowski (.60 GAA) will be in between the pipes for a Lincoln-Way North defense that has allowed five goals in its last 15 matches. Sophomore Rachel Pappas (21 goals) has emerged as the team’s scoring star, while freshman Bianca Galassini (10 goals, 13 assists) can score and facilitate.
As a single school high school district, St. Charles won a state-best seven girls’ soccer titles from 1990-2000. The school became the East campus when a second high school (North) opened in 2000, and East is making its first state final trip this season under its current namesake. Fifth-year head coach Paul Jennison has quickly built the Fighting Saints back into a contender, thanks in part to strong play from upperclassmen like senior midfielder Amanda Hilton (16 goals, 13 assists) and junior forward Darcy Cunningham (15 goals, 15 assists).

New Trier Trevians (29-1-0) vs.
Waubonsie Valley Warriors (22-1-3)

Head coach Jim Burnside led New Trier to the state finals in his first season in 1997, where the Trevians finished third, and has filled the school trophy case with three state champion and six total trophies since. A 1-0 loss to semifinal foe Waubonsie Valley is New Trier’s only blemish this season, as senior forward Maddie Mulford (25 goals, 11 assists) and sophomore goalie Dani Kaufman (.29 GAA) have helped set the tone for a squad that has shutout 24 of its 30 opponents this season.
Julie Bergstrom established Waubonsie Valley as a dominant program in the state when the Warriors won three state titles in a four-year span from 2007-2010. After a three-year state final hiatus, Waubonsie Valley returns behind senior forward Kristen Dodson (24 goals, 7 assists) and senior midfielder Mackensie Fuller (13 goals, 12 assists). The Warriors were 4-1-3 through eight matches this season, but haven’t lost or tied since, entering Friday’s semifinal on an 18-match win streak.
