2014 Boys Volleyball

The 2014 IHSA Boys Volleyball State Finals return to Hoffman Estates High School on Friday and Saturday, June 6-7. The 2014 tournament marks the 23rd consecutive year of an IHSA State Series, after the sport debuted in 1992, and Hoffman Estates has hosted every spring since 1995.

IHSA Boys Volleyball has grown from 73 competing teams in the inaugural campaign to 202 team entries in 2014, and parity has increased with the growing numbers. The past four seasons have produced four different state champions and Walter Payton Prep is the lone of the eight state qualifiers this season who also reached the state finals a year ago.

A brief synopsis and individual team stat leaders from each qualifying team are available below:

New Trier (32-7) makes its third state final trip head coach Sue Ellen Haak since 2007 and is in search of its first title since 1995 (second overall). The Trevians have won 11 straight matches entering the weekend and are 1-2 this season against quarterfinal opponent Lake Park.

Lake Park (32-6) makes its second state final trip in three seasons under third-year head coach (and Lake Park alum) Tim Murphy, and hopes to bring home its first-ever boys’ volleyball trophy. The Lancers feature a versatile offense that has three players who have registered 227 or more kills this season.

Edwardsville (21-12) is back in the state final for the second time in school history, after head coach Andrew Bersett led the Tigers to their first appearance in 2011. Edwardsville now looks to earn its first victory at the state finals and could be aided by the experience of two team members who won a state title with Tigers’ soccer team this past fall.

Lincoln-Way East (38-1) hopes to have state final success similar to fellow district school Lincoln-Way North, who placed second a year ago. The two schools have met in the Sectional final the past two seasons, as East prevailed to clinch its fourth state final trip and first under fifth-year head coach Kristopher Fiore in 2014.

Casey Feeney has built Walter Payton Prep (30-7) into Chicago’s top boys’ volleyball program, as the Grizzlies make their third straight state final appearance in 2014. The squad now looks to take the next step by earning its first state final victory in senior standout Earl Schultz’s final season.

After winning 20 matches or more in nine of his 10 seasons at Warren (26-13), head coach Yun Chen and the Blue Devils finally breakthrough in 2014 for the school’s first state final appearance. Warren’s senior class is used to success, having gone undefeated on the freshman and sophomore levels during their careers.

Head coach Tony Hornilla is developing Morton (22-9) into a perennial contender, as the Mustangs make their third state final trip in the past six seasons. The squad won each of its four postseason matches in two games apiece, and hopes to continue its hot play in the state finals.

Glenbard West (33-6) enters the state finals having won 33 games for the third time in head coach Christine Gunta-Mayer’s nine-year tenure. The Hilltoppers took fourth in their first-ever state appearance in 2011 and hope to ride their current hot play, winners of 14 of their last 15 matches, to another trophy.
