The 2013 IHSA Boys & Girls Cross Country State Finals return to Peoria on Saturday, November 9, marking the 68th annual season of the boy’s state finals and the 35th of the girl’s state meet. All six races will unfold over the three-mile course at Detweiller Park, which is hosting the event for the 44th consecutive year. The sixth-year of the three-class state championship series will be documented on IHSA.tv, which will release highlights of the races on the website in the days that follow the meet.

1A GIRLS
St. Teresa unseated three-time defending Class 1A state champ Winnebago in 2010 and then proceeded to run off three titles of its own. The usual suspects will be there to push the Bulldogs in their bid for four, including Elmwood, who has placed second three times since 2006.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2012 State Meet: St. Teresa (1st); Monticello (2nd); Rochester (3rd); PORTA (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Rachel Devereux, St. Teresa (3rd, 17:46); Naomi Springer, Olympia (5th, 17:51); Victoria Bianco, Chicago Latin (9th, 17:53)
Top 2013 Sectional Team: Chicago Latin (35 points at Lisle Sectional)
Top 2013 Sectional Individual: Anna Sophia Keller, St. Anthony (16:45 at Decatur St. Teresa Sectional)

1A BOYS
With St. Thomas More not qualifying to return to Peoria to defend its state title, the 2013 field will be wide open in Class 1A. 2013 runner-up Elmwood and third-place Shelbyville are both back, while Chicago’s Latin High School was impressive in Sectional action.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Elmwood (2nd); Shelbyville (3rd)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Nick Hess, St. Thomas More (3rd, 15:01)

Top 2013 Sectional Individual: Jon David, Oakwood (14:46 at St. Teresa Sectional)

2A GIRLS
Yorkville won its second consecutive team championship a year ago behind the efforts of three freshmen finishing in the Top 25 individually. The return of that trio will make the Lady Foxes tough to unseat in their bid for a third straight title, but with nine of the Top 10 teams from a year ago returning in 2013, there will be plenty of talent in the field.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Yorkville (1st); Normal University (2nd); Montini (3rd); Glenbard South (4th); Marengo (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Victoria Clinton, Kaneland (1st, 16:56); Mary Jeanne Gilbert, Peoria Notre Dame (3rd, 17:07); Sami Staples, Crystal Lake Central (4th, 17:09); Skyler Bollinger, Yorkville (5th, 17:11); Sydney Billingsley, Normal University (6th, 17:21); Summer Peirson, Yorkville (8th, 17:31); Diane Lipa, Glenbard South (10th, 17:33)
Top 2013 Sectional Team: Yorkville (50 points at Wheaton Academy Sectional)
Top 2013 Sectional Individual: Mary Jeanne Gilbert, Peoria Notre Dame (17:10 at Normal West Sectional)

2A BOYS
Jones High School’s state title was the first for a Chicago Public School since Lane claimed the one-class crown in 1963. The Eagles follow the historical title by trying to become the second school (Belvidere North in 2009-10) to win back-to-back crowns in Class 2A since the three-class era began in 2007.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Jones (1st); Yorkville (3rd); Crystal Lake Central (4th); Glenbard South (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Johnny Leverenz, Danville (9th, 14:46)
Top 2013 Sectional Team: Chicago Jones (22 points at Chicago University Sectional)
Top 2013 Sectional Individual: Zach Hird, Alleman (14:40 at Normal West Sectional)

3A GIRLS
Naperville North won its fourth team title since 2001 and fifth overall a year ago behind the efforts of a group that featured just one senior among the seven scoring runners. The Huskies will be one of the favorites again, but Glenbard West could challenge behind senior Madeline Perez (pictured), who set an all-class course record (16:02) a year ago en route to winning the Class 3A race.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Naperville North (1st); Glenbard West (3rd); New Trier (4th); Palatine (5th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Madeline Perez, Glenbard West (1st, 16:02); Olivia Ryan, Fenwick (5th, 16:43); Lisa Luczak, Glenbard West (6th, 16:45); Lauren Van Vlierbergen, Jacobs (7th, 16:47); Emily Leonard, Maine South (9th, 16:51)
Top 2013 Sectional Team: Glenbard West (30 points at Lake Park Sectional)
Top 2013 Sectional Individual: Madeline Perez, Glenbard West (16:44 at Lake Park Sectional)

3A BOYS
York and head coach Joe Newton added to their legacy in 2012, as the Dukes won their state-record 28th state championship. The Dukes are always in contention come this time of year, but were bested by one of the favorites in 2013, New Trier, at the Sectional level this season. Meanwhile, 2012 runner-up O'Fallon returns several key runners from a year ago.
Top 5 Team Returnees From 2012 State Meet: York (1st); O’Fallon (2nd); Lyons (3rd); Lake Zurich (4th)
Top 10 Individual Returnees From 2012 State Meet: Patrick Perrier, O'Fallon (3rd, 14:15); Jesse Reiser, McHenry (7th, 14:33); Zack Smith, Downers Grove North (8th, 14:33); Steven Salvano, Buffalo Grove, (9th, 14:37)
