School Classification Changes

On April 25, 2006, the IHSA Board of Directors adopted a classification policy that placed the five-ninths (55.6%) of IHSA member schools in Class A and four-ninths (44.4%) in Class AA. Based on figures available at that time, the Board anticipated an enrollment cut-off of 744.

As of May 12, 2006, there are 756 IHSA member schools. Based on official figures received from the Illinois State Board of Education, the following classifications have been established for the 2006-07 school term.

Classification cut-off for 2006-07, pending Board approval: 

• 730.00 and below = Class A (420 schools)
• 730.01 and above = Class AA (336 schools)

Classification changes: The following schools will change classes for the 2006-07 school term:

• From Class A up to Class AA: Addison (Driscoll), Chicago (Hales Franciscan), Chicago (Hirsch), Melrose Park (Walther Lutheran), Richmond (R.-Burton).
  
  (Update of May 15: The enrollment Walther Lutheran submitted to the ISBE was incorrect. The school has been returned to Class A.)
  
  
• From Class AA down to Class A: Elgin (St. Edward), Fairbury (Prairie Central), Palos Heights (Chicago Christian), Peoria (Manual).
  
  (Update of June 12: Peoria Manual's request to remain in Class AA in all sports was approved by the Board of Directors..)
  
  

Variance schools: The following schools have applied for an enrollment variance for 2006-07. They are (with the schools involved):

• Kewanee (H.S.) -- Bradford, Geneseo, Kewanee (Wethersfield), and Toulon (Stark County)

Upcoming school consolidations (at end of this term):  None reported.

Anticipated new member schools: Grayslake (North).
