Anthony Rainey, principal of Luther South High School in Chicago, was elected to the IHSA Board of Directors in 2006.

Rainey is a 1972 graduate of Phillips High School where he played football. He graduated from Illinois Benedictine University with a degree in education with a physical education major and went on to receive a degree in religious studies from Concordia University in River Forest.  He completed his Master’s Degree in School Administration from Chicago State University. Rainey has been involved in Lutheran education for 30 years beginning with his first teaching position at St. Paul Lutheran Elementary School on the southside of Chicago.

Rainey has served at Luther South for 28 years teaching and coaching.  He was the Illinois Cross Country and Track & Field Coach of the Year for 1991 and 1997.  He was the Illinois Football Coach of the Year for 1989 and 1990.  He was the Illinois Basketball Coach of the Year for 1989 and 1990.  His boys track team has won state championships in 1991 and 1997 with numerous runner-up finishes in other years. He was also the district Athletic Director of the Year for Illinois in 2000.  He also served on various IHSA committees including the Track and Field Advisory Committee, the All-State Academic Selection Team, and the Track and Field Games Committee for both boys and girls.

Rainey has taught physical education, health, and theology.  He has also been the Dean of Students, Athletic Director and Assistant Principal.  He is presently the Executive Director, Principal and Athletic Director of Luther High School South.

Rainey has been awarded the Chicagoland Lutheran Educators Foundation Teacher of the Year Award for Excellence in teaching, the Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Award from St. Paul Lutheran School, and was inducted as an educator in the Philips High School Hall of Fame.  He has served as clinician for multicultural education, home & family, and mentoring workshops throughout the country.
 

Rainey lives in Chicago with his wife Vivian. They have two daughters, Dione and Anna.
