Gregory D. Jones, Principal of Sparta High School, represents Division 7 on the IHSA Board of Directors. He was elected to the Board in October 2009.
Gregory has been involved in IHSA activities since 1980, as a coach and principal at Sparta High School.
Gregory’s home town is Alton, IL where he participated in baseball. In 1972, his senior year, they were runners-up at the state meet.
He attended Lewis Clark Community College after graduating from Alton High. While at (LCCC) on a baseball scholarship, he also played basketball. After (LCCC) he transferred to Mckendree College where he continued playing both baseball and basketball. He also earned a B. S. at Mckendree College in 1977.
From 1977-1979 Greg taught in the Alton School District # 11. He also coached baseball, basketball and foot ball. Greg moved to Sparta in 1980, where he coached football, basketball and track. In 1984, Gregory received his Masters Degree in Guidance at SIUE. He was also the head basketball coach and track coach. Greg became principal at Sparta in 1998. That same year he received his Administrative Certificate from SIUC. Greg has served on the Track and Field Advisory Committee prior to being elected to the Board of Directors.
Greg has a wife, son, daughter and a grandson.
