Jim Boyd, principal at
Riverdale High School in Port Byron, represents Division 4 on the
IHSA Board of Directors. He was first appointed to the Board in
the summer of 2004 and won election in October 2004.
Boyd has been involved in IHSA activities since
1983, first
as a coach, second as an athletic director and finally as a
principal – all at Riverdale High School.
Jim’s home town is Cedar Falls, Iowa. He participated in football, wrestling and golf before
graduating from Cedar Falls High School.
He attended Morningside College in Sioux
City, Iowa, on a football and wrestling scholarship where he was a
starter on the Morningside wrestling team for two years before
transferring to the University of Northern Iowa. He earned a BA in 1977 and a master’s degree in school
administration in 1983, both from the University of Northern Iowa.
From 1979-1981, Boyd taught at Tiffin High
School in Clear Creek, Iowa, and coached football, wrestling and
track. From 1981-1983, he served as a graduate assistant in the
Department of School Administration at the University of Northern
Iowa and coached wrestling at Peet Junior High in Cedar Falls,
Iowa.
In 1983, Jim came to Riverdale High School and coached
football and wrestling. During
his tenure as head wrestling coach, the Riverdale wrestling teams
won five regional championships, qualified three teams to the dual
team wrestling state final. During
his eleven years as the head coach, he had three individual state
champions, thirteen place winners and fifteen qualifiers. His dual meet record included over 150 wins.
In 1989, Jim became the athletic director at
Riverdale High School. In
1993, he became the middle school principal and the district
athletic director. In 1993, he became the high school principal.
Boyd served on the IHSA’s Legislative
Commission prior to being elected to the Board of Directors.
Jim and his wife Robin have a son and a
daughter.
