IHSA Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - 2007-08

SPORTSMANSHIP Advisory Committee

April 16, 2008

The IHSA Sportsmanship Advisory Committee met at the IHSA Office in Bloomington, Illinois, on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Committee members present were: Julie Cochran, IESA; Matt Hensley, Mahomet (M.-Seymour); Patti Hie, Crystal Lake (Prairie Ridge); Therese McLaughlin, Calumet City (T.F. North); John Schmitt, Pecatonica; Mike Ward, Pleasant Plains and IHSA Assistant Executive Director Beth Sauser was also in attendance.  Jeff Craig, Park Forest (Rich East); Sara Keene, Columbia and Tamara Sterling, Chicago (Simeon) were not in attendance.

RECOMMENDATION FOR BOARD ACTION:

            1. No recommendations forwarded for Board action.

Committee Discussion and Actions:

1. Committee members will call the contact person from each conference in their division to review and discuss the Do What’s Right! Program.   

2. Discussed the DWR! Poster contest and the Sportsperson of the Year contest.  Members of the committee will serve as judges to determine the winners in both contests.

3. Read and reviewed the Sports Illustrated article addressing fan sportsmanship at the collegiate level.  This article will be used during one of the DWR! Workshop sessions.

4. The Committee reviewed the DWR! information for the IADA Conference packet.

5. The Committee recommended changes to the DWR! information on the IHSA website. The 2008-09 registration forms and surveys are available now for conferences or independent schools to use. There are two surveys to choose from, one for returning registered conferences and a second for conference registering for the DWR! Program for the first time.

6. The committee discussed football only conferences and DWR! state final recognition. If the football conference does not register for the DWR! Program but the schools regular conference does register then those football teams are still eligible to earn a state final banner.

7. The Committee redesigned the state final sportsmanship rating form.

8. The Committee discussed the formation of the DWR! seven divisional Summits.  The tentative dates for the summits are September 16, 17, 18, 23, 24 and 25, 2008 from 9 am to 1 pm.
a. Each school in the division is requested to bring a total of 2 boys and 2 girls who are sophomores and juniors as well as 3 adults in leadership roles such as: Superintendent, Principal, Athletic Administrator, Booster Club President, Student Council Advisor, Head Coach and Assistant Coach.
b. Hold the summits every other year.  During the off year each member school will receive DWR! Program binders to use during the school year.

c. Tentative Time Schedule:
                              8:00-9:00         Check in
                              9:00-9:30         Opening Session
                              9:40 – 10:25     Session 1
10:35 – 11:20   Session 2
                              11:30 – 12:25   Session3
                              12:25- 1:00      Working lunch and final session

d. Suggested session monitors and speakers are students from leadership conference, high school
administrators and coaches.
                  e. Recommended session titles are: DWR! Body (drug testing, health and wellness, DWR! School (SI article, individual school practices and solutions), DWR! State (create ideas for statewide manual).

9. The committee would like a fax sent to all schools this May announcing the DWR! Workshops.

10. The committee thanked Patti Hie, Therese McLaughlin, John Schmitt and Sara Keene for their service.
