December 5, 2007

The IHSA Boys Football Advisory Committee met at the IHSA Office, Bloomington, Illinois on Wednesday, December 5, 2007, beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Committee members present were:  Patrick Drew, Carlinville; Dick Duval, St. Joseph (S.J.-Ogden); David Inserra, Park Ridge (Maine South); Al Martin, DuQuoin (H.S.); James Nudera, Oak Park (O.P.-River Forest); Steve Smithers, Rock Island (Alleman); Jim Unruh, Carthage (Illini West); and James Voyles, Tuscola.  Also in attendance were John Venturi of the Illinois Coaches Association and IHSA Assistant Executive Director Dave Gannaway.  Committee member Wesley Yates, Chicago (Julian) was unable to attend.

The Minutes of the December 6, 2006 meeting were accepted.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS RECOMMENDATION:

1.         Item V. A.-5)   Tournament Assignments and Pairings, Sites, Rankings, Pairings:

Recommendation: Change the sentence to the following: “When circumstances warrant, either school may request a site other than the designated host school’s field.  A new site might be used subject to the approval of the IHSA Board of Directors, after consultation with the host school.”

Rationale: This would allow the IHSA to get involved in whether a school should use a given facility to host a play-off game.

approved

ADMINISTRATIVE RECOMMENDATIONS:

1.         The Committee reviewed the hosting policy and recommended that a sub-committee be formed to review the idea of semifinal games being hosted at a neutral site.  There are many factors that need to be discussed and information needs to be gathered from several entities to see if this would work.

2.         Make the initial 1 to 32 seed available to everyone on the web site so that when the quadrants of 8 meet in the semifinals people can figure out ahead of time who would host.

ITEMS OF GENERAL DISCUSSION:

1.         Discussion occurred on the higher seed hosting unless the lower seed has hosted fewer games.  The Committee felt that the process that is in place now is a very good one and there is no need to make any changes.

2.         The Committee discussed the starting of football being moved to an earlier start date because of so many schools starting early.  This limits the number of practices that schools will be able to have relative to the first game.  This would be a by-law change and needs to be submitted by a principal.
