IHSA Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - 2006-07Journalism Advisory CommitteeMay 9, 2007 Minutes of the IHSA Journalism Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes The IHSA Journalism Advisory Committee was held at the IHSA Office in Bloomington on Wednesday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Committee members present were: State final manager - Sally Turner; Advisory committee members, Dixie Schroeder, Princeton; John Gonczy, Chicago (Mr. Carmel); Cathy Wall, Harrisburg; and Steve Steele, Taylorville. Dave Brady, Summit (Argo), Stan Zoller, Rolling Meadows; and Judy Wiegand, Champaign (Centennial) were unable to attend. State final scorer, Dave Daily was also in attendance. IHSA Asst. Executive Director Susan Knoblauch conducted the meeting. Terms and conditions Recommendations 1. Item VI–D-3-Time Schedule Recommendation: Editorial Cartooning and Editorial Writing be moved to Block B events (from Block A). Rationale: This change will allow students to be in Advertising in Block A and Editorial Cartooning in Block B which typically could involve the same artistic student. (The Editorial events need to stay in the same block because they utilize the same prompt). Approved 2. Item VI-D-3-Time Schedule Recommendation: Feature Sports Writing be moved from Block B to Block A. Rationale: This will balance the number of contest categories in each block to seven. This makes room assignments and judging assignments more balanced. Approved 3. Item VIII-A-1-Tournament Rules – Categories Recommendation: Feature Photography – After completing their assignment, students will return to the computer lab to download and edit their three best photos for judging. Student will gather the appropriate cut line information and judging will be done on the computer screen. Rationale: This recommendation will create consistency as to how the feature photography event will be conducted at the contest site. Approved 4. Item VIII- A-3-Tournament Rules – Categories Recommendation: Review Writing – Students will write a review suitable for publication. Rationale: Genre will be posted on the IHSA website one week prior to sectional and state. Approved Recommendation: Advertising – Students will be given information from two business for which they will design ads to fit certain sizes on an 81/2 by 11 sheet of provided paper. Rationale: This recommendation clarifies the process in which student will design their competition ads. Approved 6. Item VIII-A-14-Tournament Rules – Categories Recommendation: Yearbook Theme Development- Students will provide a colored cover page and a black and white title page (not a divider page). Rationale: This clarifies and distinguishes a title page from a divider page in the contest competition. Approved 7. Item VIII-C-6-Special Rules and Limitations –Equipment Recommendation: For writing categories only- Students may bring a current AP stylebook and a dictionary for use during the contest. Rationale: This would clarify that the following material is allowed to be used as a reference. Approved 8. Item VIII-C-6-Special Rules and Limitations –Equipment Recommendation: Yearbook Theme Development may use the following materials: magazines, markers, colored pencils, scissors, glue/glue sticks. Rationale: This clarifies what students are allowed to bring to the contest sites and use in their designs. Approved Administrative Recommendations: The IHSA will continue to promote the state series in journalism working with the press professional associations. One such venture includes IPF providing a regional list of judges and IJEA in conjunction with EIU in compiling the state final winners in a booklet. Approximate word limits have been added to specific categories. These word limits will appear on the sample prompts and are approximate guides. Sites: Sectionals – 7 locations (pending entry numbers) (Recommendations were: Roosevelt University, University of Illinois, and Southern Illinois University. The committee also suggested contacting the College of Lake County, Western Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Illinois State University, Bradley University, and Lewis University as other potential sites. An ideal facility to host must have availability to three large computer labs. The committee will develop a host manager’s manual this summer. Sally Turner and James Tidwell were commended on running the state final at EIU. Their services as state final managers are directly contributed to the success of the event. Point of emphasis to the managers regarding the time schedule: The following time schedule will be implemented: 9-10:00 Registration; 10:00-10:30 Opening Session; 10:30-12:00 First Competition Block; 12:15-1:45 Second Competition Block with awards following as soon as possible at 2pm with block A awards. Ranking sheets will be reviewed for consistency and editorial revisions. Two judges will rank each category and provide students with one ranking sheet. Judging of the Competition – IPF will provide the IHSA with a list of interested potential journalism judges. Items of Discussion Ballots will be provided to contests site next year to expedite the judge’s rankings. A swap shot will be organized at the state final for 2008, where students can showcase their material. The advisors meeting at the state final will be a collaboration of the IHSA, EIU and IJEA and the agenda will include celebration and recognitions of advisors. The discussion of headline and caption writing led to a decision to table adding any additonal events until a review in 2008. The committee reviewed all of the notes and recommendations presented by advisors to the advisory board members. The committee thanked Zolller, Brady, Schroeder, Wall and Tidwell for their 3 year term on the advisory committee.
