IHSA Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes - 2006-07boys/Girls TENNIS Advisory CommitteeNovember 1, 2006 The IHSA Boys/Girls Tennis Advisory Committee met in the IHSA Office in Bloomington, Illinois, on Wednesday, November 1, 2006, beginning at 10:00 a.m. Committee Members present were: Kelly Willard, Metamora; Michael Hand, Lisle (Benet Academy); Melissa Welch, Urbana (H.S.); Brad Lee, Carmi (C.-White County); Jim Prunty, Chicago (St. Ignatius); Tracy Waters-Miller, Barrington; and Mike Terry, Quincy (Sr.). Also in attendance were Girls State Tennis Tournament Director, Jean Rezny, Mt. Prospect (Prospect); Boys State Tennis Tournament Director Matt Norris, Arlington Heights (Hersey); and Assistant Executive Director Susan Knoblauch. TERMS AND CONDITIONS RECOMMENDATIONS 1. Item VIII-A-2-c- State Final Tournament Scoring Recommendation: The “No-Ad” scoring method shall be used in the 1st and 2nd championship and all consolation feed-in rounds at the Girls State Tournament. If the tournament is taken indoors, “No-Ad” scoring shall be used except for Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and Final round matches in which regular scoring shall be used. Rationale: During the fall tournament there is an issue with daylight and the completion of matches due earlier sunsets. “No-Ad” scoring for rounds 1 and 2 would secure that those matches could be completed in a timely manner. Approved 2. Item VII-F- Coaching Recommendation: Add 5f…A coach’s name may only appear with one school and that coach shall only be eligible to coach with one school. Rationale: This committee believes that coaches appearing for more than one team create a conflict of interest. Rejected ITEMS OF GENERAL DISCUSSION The committee heard reports from Jean Rezny, girls’ tennis state final manager, on the recently completed girls’ state final tournament. Items of discussion included use of indoor court space on Friday, concerns with regular scoring and earlier sunsets, and online entries of sectional results. Matt Norris reported on last spring’s boys’ state finals. Matt suggested using the USTA officials in a roaming capacity as well during the state tournament. Other discussion items covered player behavior, use of coaches’ passes and great weather. The committee applauded the efforts of both Jean and Matt for such excellent management of the state finale events. The IHSA also acknowledged Jean and Matt’s services as being crucial to the success of the state tournament. 4. The discussion of further implementation of technology will be examined by the IHSA. This will include brackets online, uploading and downloading competitor information, and random placement of the seeded draw. 5. The committee reviewed the continuing practice of seeding 3, 4 and 5, 6 for the sectional tournament only. Concerns of being able to manipulate the tournament to longer seed meetings were discussed. 6. The committee discussed the entry numbers in tennis and a review of the 2 class system. Enrollment vs. % of entries will be discussed in the IHSA Principal Rules Meeting/ Town Hall Meeting this November. 7. The committee discussed concerns with defaults and teams refusing to play. 8. The committee discussed replacing a singles state qualifier if an injury occurs – It was reviewed that if that were to happen the 2nd seed should then be protected. 9. Sectional assignments and sectional complex ideas were reviewed and discussed. 10. The minimum of 20 minutes of rest between matches was reviewed. 12. The committee heard a review of the IHSA protocol to deal with unethical coach/player behavior. 13. The committee was reminded by Mike Hand to discuss support for the submitted By-law proposals to increase boys and girls tennis contest limitations from 18 to 20 dates. 14. The IHSA thanked Mike Hand and Kelly Willard for their service to the IHSA as a member of the tennis advisory committee. Seats on the advisory committee are available for IHSA Legislative Divisions 3 and 4. Interested parties can submit a request to serve in writing to the IHSA office. The meeting was adjourned at 1:30.
