Competitive Cheer Advisory Committee Minutes

August 31, 2005

The IHSA Competitive Cheerleading Advisory Committee met at the IHSA office in Bloomington, Illinois on Wednesday, August 31st, 2005 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Committee members present were: Pam Marcoline-Griffith Cheer Coach @Washington HS; Mike Bruce, Cheer Coach @ Sandburg; Principal Rich Wherley, Eureka; Mickey Klement, Head Clinician; Athletic Director, John Martin, Lincolnshire (Stevenson); Carla Taylor, Cheer Coach @ Colfax (Ridgeview); Terry Aebischer, Cheer Coach @ Highland, John Powers, Cheer Coach @ Lake Zurich; Dennis Murphy, CPL Administrator; Neva Corn, Cheer Coach @ Pinckneyville HS and IHSA Assistant Executive Director Susan Knoblauch.

Susan Knoblauch recorded and submitted the minutes. 

The Committee was requested to review the Minutes of the August meeting. 

Terms and Conditions: 

1.  Recommendation:  The scope of IHSA State Meet – 2-day event including preliminary rounds starting on Friday and Final rounds on Saturday.

Rationale:  Preliminary rounds running on Friday will allow squads recovery time in preparation for the Final round of competition on Saturday.

2.  Recommendation:  Score sheet to be adopted as presented.

Rationale:  The final score sheet and rubric reflects recommendations by the advisory committee and administrative staff recommendations.

Administrative Recommendations and Review:

  • The 5 proportional Sectionals on Saturday March 4th, 2006 will reflect proportional numbers of entries in each division based on geographical make up of entries.
  • A site recommendation will be presented to the IHSA board of directors on the Sept. 12th meeting.  High schools can express interest to host a sectional through the host availability form through the schools center
  • The advantages and disadvantage of preliminary rounds was discussed.
  • Coed will be an open division (no school size requirements) with up to 20 participants on the competition floor with 4 alternates.  At least one male must be on the competition floor at all times to be designated Coed. Twenty-five coed squads will advance directly to state.
  • The top ten teams in each division at state preliminary rounds will advance to the state final round.
  • Terms and conditions of the IHSA competitive cheerleading state series will be reviewed by the advisory committee.  Competitive Cheerleading Terms and Conditions and the Competition Manual will be mailed to the IHSA membership in late October.
  • Progress of the IHSA competitive cheerleading officials training was reviewed.  Mickey Klement is the IHSA head clinician and Mickey and Susie Knoblauch have been conducting officials clinics this fall following the Saturday rule interpretation meetings.
  • Continued edits are being added to the interactive prototype of the clinician training.
  • The final draft of the rubric and score sheet will be reviewed by the Advisory Committee and board approved this month. 

Items of General Discussion

The Committee heard reports and correspondence from the rules interpretation and officials clinic meetings.

Recommendation items from the advisory committee regarding Terms and Conditions Changes need to be submitted for implementation for the 06-07 school year

The IHSA cheerleading web page will be updated to address frequently asked questions regarding entries for the state tournament.  Fall rule interpretation meeting dates and official’s clinic dates and information from those meeting will be updated on the link as well.

The committee reviewed the Terms and conditions and made recommendations.

The committee discussed items that need to be addressed in the cheer manual such as props, music and appropriateness of lyrics and moves.
