QUOTES AND NOTES

Winning coach: Brad Bickett, Manlius (Bureau Valley) - ``First of all it's a team effort. The kids played great half-court trap tonight. We were able to harass them and create some turnovers. We just couldn't guard them man-to-man because they're just too quick."

``You saw (Stanley) Gaines go off in the second half and that was primarily because we were playing man-to-man. There was nothing we could do about it so we had to go back to the trap. I thought we did a nice job on that, especially late."

``We started to go into the trap both on makes and misses and I thought it was a big key to stopping the run they were putting on us in the fourth quarter."

``Offensively (Adam) Gutshall and (Phil) Endress. They've been down here before. This is Adam's second trip down and Endress's third trip down to the state tournament. And those guys handled themselves like champions. There's a lot of toughness there in those two kids and I think it feeds throughout the team."

``This is really a special team because there was no expectation of us getting here. We just won our 30th game tonight and to step into the final four with this group- it's a great feeling."

Losing coach: Timothy Ervin, Chicago (Providence-St. Mel) - ``We lost to a good Bureau Valley team tonight. Their defense seemed to hurt us early and we got off to a slow start and we really didn't get back into it. We made our run but we could never really get over that hump and that really was the game in a nutshell. That we didn't come out ready to play early, turn the ball over, then we decided in the second half to wake up and make the run but it was just too late because the hole we dug was too deep."

(On Bureau Valley's style of defense) ``We've all seen it before. It wasn't the first time we've seen it. Our guys just didn't execute tonight."

(On Bureau Valley compared to other schools they've seen) ``I think there's a similarity there. There's good disciplined teams that play good solid basketball and execute their game plan."

(Stanley Gaines on his feelings of the game) ``I think he said it all. You can't really give good teams a head start because no way can you catch up with them. We tried to fight it until the end of the game but like he said the hole was too deep to fight back in this type of situation."

(Stanley Gaines on the second half compared to the first) ``We got a lot of put-backs. The first half I just didn't make shots at all."
