Notes & Quotes

Manual had 20-0 run and held Thornton scoreless for nine minutes in third and fourth quarters.

Losing Coach Rocky Hill, Harvey (Thornton)

"Manual sure played well, what can I say? We go up 18-4 and you would think we were the superior team. Then they go on a run but we get it back with an eight-point lead in the third quarter. It was exactly what we wanted to do to get the mo mentum back, then we start making some careless turnovers."

"They played really well. Anyone whos ays they are a three-man team, that statement is ridiculous. Their No. 4, 5, and 6 players hurt us with their play. Those little guards they had played fabulous. They were the difference in the game. Tho se little guards and (Jerral) Page. We said coming in the game would be decided by their fourth, fifth, and sixth man against ours. Those kids really played well."

"I guess McClain gave them moreal support when he came back in for the brief time. They are a great team without him. The other kids played so well without him. Those other three kids did a heck of a job. The top three players are so good th ey tend to overlook the other three kids. Those kids can play."

"We went up early in the first half, then Frankie Williams took over for them. We made the adjustment at halftime and the other kids came around. They are a heck of a team. I think the best team won this afternoon."

Winning Coach Wayne McClain, Peoria (Manual)

"Anyboyd who saw the game knows it was a great high school basketball game. It was two great teams, sparring like heavyweight champions. They knocked us down, it seems like for 9 1/2, but the kids were able to weather it."

"Obviously, Serge (son and Rams star Sergio McClain) was nowhere near 100 percent. He wanted to go back in but I said no. But after they got a couple of more baskets, I decided to give it one more shot."

"I'd like to say Coach Hill and Thornton get bad raps. From a coaching standpoint, they've had a lot of success. I think the media puts a little too much emphasis on championships. The media needs to be more sensitive."

Sergio McClain, on getting ready for the game: "I put ice on the shoulder, and used a stimulator, and got lots of rest. It was no fun watching them dunk and have fun, and I thought if we were going to go down, I was going with them."
