Weight Control Plan Clarifications
1) To be entered in a specific weight class in the
individual or dual team state tournament series,
each wrestler is required to have at least
one-half of his weigh-ins during the entire season
at the minimum weight they will wrestle during the
state tournament series.
2) In addition, each wrestler must establish a
certified minimum weight on January 15. A
wrestler is not required to have at least one-half
of his weigh-ins at his certified weight by
January 15. For example, a wrestler can be
certified at 130 pounds on January 15 even if he
has 8 weigh-ins at 130 pounds and 10 weigh-ins at
135 pounds. However, by the end of the regular
season, he must have at least one-half of his
weigh-ins at 130 pounds.
3) A wrestler's certified weight is the lowest
weight classification at which a wrestler may
wrestle on or after January 15. Recertification
at a lower weight is prohibited. After
certification, a wrestler may not weigh-in more
than one weight class above the weight of
certification without recertifying at a higher
weight. For example, if a wrestler who is
certified at 130 pounds weighs-in at 139 pounds he
is automatically recertified at 140 pounds and he
may not return to a lower weight class.
4) Each individual entering the state series will
be granted a two pound growth allowance at the
beginning of the state series (Individual
Regional). The two pound growth allowance will
apply to all state series tournaments. As a
result, each state series weight class is
technically two pounds heavier. The only
exception, is if a wrestler's first match of the
year is during the state series. If the Individual
Regional or Dual Team Sectional tournament is a
wrestler's first weigh-in, he must wrestle at
scratch weight.
5) The weight control plan does apply to the Dual
Team State Series. A wrestler may not wrestle
below his certified weight in the Dual Team State
Series.
6) Both weigh-ins during a two day tournament
count as official weigh-ins.
7) When there are consecutive days of wrestling
(Rule 4-5-4) a 1 pound allowance is granted each
day for all wrestlers. Weigh-ins conducted under
these conditions are officials weigh-ins.
8) It is not legal for schools to give weight
allowances outside of the National Federation
rules. Weight allowances are only appropriate when
there have been consecutive days of wrestling. For
example, a weight allowance for a Holiday
Tournament is in violation of National Federation
rules. Weigh-ins conducted under those
circumstances are not official and do not count
toward meeting the requirements of the weight
control plan.
