Downers Grove (South) and Chicago (Mother McAuley) have met in the Class AA title game four times in the last six years: 1992, 1994, 1996, and now in 1997. McAuley won the first two, and Downers Grove South won last year. The teams have played each other here in Redbird Arena in each of the last six seasons (although not always in the title game).
Winning coach, Denise Lazzeroni, Downers Grove (South): "I think my team played great. It's nice to sit back and watch them. This is pretty much the most well-rounded (of the tournament). "
Erika VanHootegem: "This year's team is more of a team. It's more fun and exciting. (If they are more talented than last year:) Even more so."
Lindsey Filkins: "We figured it was going to be a hard match. We just went out there and did our best."
Losing coach, George Sherman, Palatine (H.S.): "(Downers Grove South) played a great match. We couldn't sustain it. I saw no flaws. Sometimes you get in a hole too deep, and it's hard to climb out of. Don't get me wrong because my girls
played great."
Vesna Grbavac: "I'm very disappointed, because we were intimidated, but I hope our game will be better tonight against Hersey."
