| 1973 | IHSA sponsors first state meet in girls track and field at O'Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, won by Springfield (Southeast). |
| 1977 | State final meet split into two classes, Class A (small schools), won by New Lenox (Providence), and Class AA (large schools) won by East St. Louis (Lincoln). |
| 1996 | Triple jump competition added. |
