1998-99

Carrollton's Dick Hamann has seen many great moments in IHSA track and field during his 40-year coaching career, including 17 years as a State Meet volunteer official.
Fans attending this year's Boys State Track Meet will be able to share a special moment with him as he celebrates his birthday (May 29) and is the 39th volunteer official to be recognized by IHSA as the 1999 Honorary Referee.
A native of Mascoutah, with degrees from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and Washington University in St. Louis, Dick has spent his entire teaching and coaching career at Carrollton. He taught one semester in 1942, then served in the U. S. Army during World War II obtaining the rank of Captain, and returned to Carrollton in 1946.
Over those years Dick has been the school's head track and field coach since 1958, its head boys basketball coach for 24 years and its athletic director for more than a quarter of a century. Since the advent of the two-class system in IHSA track and field, more than 80 athletes from Carrollton have advanced to the State Meet.
Hamann was also a member of the Track and Field Advisory Committee for nine years, and the IHSA Legislative Commission for two years.
Dick is not scheduled to be working the meet this year, but he may hang out at the finish line, where he spent many of his volunteer years as the Accutrack operator.
