Boys Track & Field Honorary Meet Referee 1997-98

Willie May
Athletic Director
Evanston (Twp.)
There never has been a hurdle too big for Willie May to clear. He has been doing it all his life.

May, a three-event state champion from Blue Island High School in 1955, and the Olympic silver medalist in the high hurdles in the 1960 Rome Olympics, is the 1998 Honorary Referee of the IHSA Boys State Final Track and Field Meet.

While serving Evanston (Twp.) High School as its athletic director since 1983, and state meet manager of the boys swimming state finals since 1987, Willie's first love has been track and field. He's been a track coach in Illinois since 1965, starting at Oak Lawn (Richards) and moving on to Evanston (Twp.) in 1967. His 1979 Wildkit team was state champion, while two others finished second and two more third.

A member of the IHSA Track Advisory Committee, Willie has been a volunteer meet official at the boys state final since 1985.

Willie becomes the 38th volunteer official recognized by the IHSA as Honorary Referee of the annual Boys State Track Meet.
