CHICAGO DIVISION PLAYOFF SCENARIOS 2009This year, teams in the four “Chicago Divisions” of the Chicago Public League are eligible for the IHSA Football playoffs. However, to earn consideration for the playoff field, these teams must finish in the top two (either first or second) in their divisions. At most, eight Chicago Division teams will qualify for the playoffs, but the number may be less. With one week to go, four Chicago Division teams – Senn, Dyett, Raby, and Bogan – have clinched playoff spots, as shown in the accompanying standings. Here is an overview of the other potential playoff qualifiers: In the Big Shoulders Conference, Mather, Taft, and Foreman are currently tied for first place at 5-1. All these teams have six wins overall, enough to clinch a playoff spot, but only two will qualify. If all three teams win (or if all three lose) this weekend, Mather will win the tiebreaker for the championship and Taft will be the second place team since it defeated Foreman. If exactly two of the three teams win, they will both qualify for the IHSA playoffs. If only one team wins, it will be the conference champion and the remaining playoff spot will be decided by the head-to-head result (Foreman beat Mather, Mather beat Taft, Taft beat Foreman). In Second City Conference, four teams – Phillips, Uplift, Urban Prep, and Douglass – are still capable of finishing in second place with a number of tiebreaker scenarios including a four-way tie for second place. Whichever team may finish in second, it will have to win this week to qualify for the IHSA playoffs. Phillips, if it finishes second, would clinch a playoff spot with a win; the other teams will have difficulty making the 256-team cutoff even with a win. In the Windy City Conference, Julian has clinched second place and will clinch a playoff spot with a win this weekend. If Julian loses, it will be on the bubble on Pairings Night.
