The 2015 IHSA Class 1A Boys Soccer State Finals return to the Bloomington Cornbelter’s Corn Crib in Normal on Friday and Saturday, October 30-31. Friday’s semifinals will unfold at 5:00 and 7:00 p.m., respectively. Saturday’s third-place match will begin at 3:00 p.m., with the state championship match to follow. All four matches this weekend will be broadcast live by the NFHS Network on www.IHSA.tv, while the state championship match will also be rebroadcast on Comcast SportsNet Chicago.

Semifinal #1

Keith Country Day Cougars (21-4-0)  vs.
Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden Coop Wildcats (19-5-1)

Keith County Day is making its third state final trip in school history, all which have come under head coach Rillo Oliveira. The Cougars state final berths have come in three-year increments (3rd in 2009, 4th in 2012), so they hope the third time will be a charm for the program to earn its first semifinal victory. The Cougars rolled early in the postseason, outscoring their first three opponents by a combined score of 22-2 behind a balanced offense that features seven players with six goals or more this season. That group includes senior Mitar Petrovic (25 goals) and sophomore midfielder Jakob Schoon (10 goals, 10 assists). Junior Rueben Cisneros (.92 GAA, 223 saves) was the man between the pipes in the Cougars one-goal victories in the Sectional final and Super-Sectional rounds.

The Anna-Jonesboro/Cobden Coop makes its first state final appearance in school history, where the Wildcats hope to become the fourth straight Class 1A state champion to hail from Southern Illinois (2012-Alton Marquette, 2013-Gibault, 2014-Columbia). Mark Boomer’s squad enters having won 13 of 14 matches, thanks in part to the amazing senior season that forward Zach Parr has put together, which includes 45 goals and 10 assists. Meanwhile, Parr’s younger brother, sophomore goaltender Jake Parr (1.32 GAA, 148 saves), is the last line of defense on a team that has allowed one goal in its last three matches and allowed just one postseason goal to go with four shutouts. Senior midfielder Ryan Stark (11 goals, 12 assists) adds experience and skill on both ends of the pitch.

Semifinal #2
Timothy Christian Trojans (17-4-0)  vs.
University High Illineks (24-0-1)

A 1-1 tie on September 30 with Class 3A opponent Champaign Central is the only thing standing between Uni High and a perfect season, however, head coach Philip Anders’ team will still finish without a loss if they hoist the state title trophy this weekend. Panos Voulgaris was a contributor on the school’s first state team in 2012 that placed second, and he has developed into its leading scorer as a senior. Voulgaris is one of three Illineks with 20 goals or more this season, a club that includes senior forward Will Ahlgren (20 goals, 14 assists) and sophomore forward Rahi Miraftab-Salo (21 goals, 24 assists). The Illineks feature a stout defense that hasn’t allowed more than two goals in a match this season to go along with 13 shutouts.

Timothy Christian has emerged as a perennial power, having reached the state title match three times since 2008, including its lone championship in 2009. Head coach Stephen Fernandes is continuing the tradition in his first season at the helm, as Timothy avenged a regular-season loss to The Latin School (2-0) with a 2-1 Super-Sectional triumph. The 2015 edition of the Trojan offense runs through sophomore forward Jimmy Allen, who has netted 33 goals this season and is already the program’s career scoring leader, while junior midfielder Joshua Anderson (18 goals, 12 assists) is another capable scorer. Junior goalie Noah Marrera (1.24 GAA) is a part of a defensive unit that has posted 10 shutouts this season.
