The 2016 IHSA Speech-Individual Events State Finals will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 19-20 at the Peoria Civic Center in Peoria. The 2016 state meet marks the 76th annual edition of the state final and the seventh year that the Peoria Civic Center has hosted the event.
Saturday's award performances will be streamed live on the NFHS Network via www.IHSA.tv at 5:30 p.m. with a subscription.
State champions will be crowned in 14 events over the course of the meet, including an overall team champion based upon points earned in each individual event. A top team will also be recognized in the Performance in the Round category, although that event does not earn points toward the overall team title.
Hinsdale Central hoisted the IHSA Speech-Individual Events state championship trophy for the first time in school history in 2015, part of historic 2014-15 school year for the Red Devils in sports and activities. The school’s best previous finish was a pair of third-place finishes in 2007 and 2013, as the first state title was anchored by a pair of event state titles in Dramatic Duet Acting (Jackson Dockery & Nicole Labun) and Radio Speaking (Divya Surabhi). Runner-up Wheaton Warrenville South also had two event state champs in Maddie Corgiat (Humorous Interpretation) and Jon Murphy (Special Occasion Speaking), in addition to winning the exhibition event Performance In The Round. Zach Kennedy & Reese Richardson were state champs in Humorous Duet Acting, helping perennial power Downers Grove South to a third-place finish. Marian Catholic (Chicago Heights) and Southland College Prep rounded out the Top 5 by finishing in a tie for fourth-place.
