The 2016 IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals will unfold this weekend at O’Brien Stadium on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston. The Spring Spectacular, one of the largest high school state final meets in the country, will welcome 2,449 individual qualifiers representing 405 high schools throughout Illinois.

The qualifiers breakdown by class is as follows:

Class 1A: 817 qualifiers from 148 schools
Class 2A: 739 qualifiers from 123 schools
Class 3A: 893 qualifiers from 134 schools

The NFHS Network will broadcast all the action live from the track at O’Brien Stadium, however field events will not be able to be covered, with the exception of awards. To subscribe and watch, visit www.IHSA.tv

We already know that history will be made before a single event has been contested, as Saturday will feature the crowning of the first-ever IHSA Combined Team State Champion, which is determined by combining the scoring by wheelchair student-athletes with the traditional team scoring system.

In addition, the IHSA will continue its tradition of recognizing Honorary Officials, as Michael Fontana, Larry Foster, John Polka and Tony Rainey will be honored for their contributions to high school track & field in Illinois.

The IHSA will continue to conduct its traditional awards ceremony in Class 1A, Class 2A and Class 3A on Saturday, May 21, by presenting the top three scoring teams (first, second, third) in each class with trophies.

It will also take the team scores across all classes and add the points scored by their respective wheelchair student-athletes. These results will determine the IHSA Combined State Champion, runner-up and third-place winners. Four wheelchair student-athletes from three high schools will compete this weekend in three events (100-Meter, 200-Meter, 400-Meter) at O’Brien Stadium, including Niles West freshman Danielle Dimaria, Glenbard West freshman Ahalya Lettenberger, Metamora sophomore Savanna Klobnak, and Glenbard West sophomore Daniela Polencheck.

Illini West claimed the Class 1A title in 2015, which was the first in school history and best finish since Carthage High School finished second in 2007 (Illini West is a consolidation between Carthage HS, Dallas City HS & La Harpe HS). Illini West will have eight athletes competing in 2016, nearly one-third of the number of athletes that class leader Clifton Central (20) will have participating. Seneca (19) and St. Joseph-Ogden (18) aren’t far behind and will also have plenty of chances to score points.

Cahokia is the two-time defending Class 2A state champs after ending Springfield Southeastern’s reign of four straight state championships from 2010-2013. Cahokia has 11 qualifiers this weekend, while Southeast will again be in the mix with 16 competitors. Dunlap boasts the most qualifiers in the class, with a weekend-best 24 athletes competing in 16 individual events and four relays.

Lincoln-Way East has claimed the past two Class 3A state crowns and enters with another crop of double-digit qualifiers. The Griffins will have 19 total athletes competing in 10 individual events and four relays. Oak Park-River Forest tied for fourth a year ago and has a class-best 22 qualifiers this season, one more than Lyons and New Trier. Glenbard West was the only other school to reach 20 qualifiers.
