History was made at the 2016 IHSA Girls Track & Field State Finals on Saturday, May 21, 2016, as Glenbard West (above) was crowned the first-ever IHSA Combined Team State Champion.

Combined team state champions are determined by taking the traditional IHSA state final scoring system and combining it with the points earned by their school’s wheelchair student-athletes.

There are threshold participant numbers that have to be met in each sport in order for the combined championship to be contested, and with four wheelchair athletes competing at O’Brien Stadium on the Eastern Illinois University campus in Charleston, Girls Track & Field became the first sport to realize this new championship.

Glenbard West tallied 43 points to win the state title, while Metamora finished second with 26 points, and Niles West third with eight points.

The four student-athletes whose participation helped create history were Niles West freshman Danielle Dimaria, Freshman, Glenbard West freshman Ahalya Lettenberger, Metamora sophomore Savanna Klobnak, and Glenbard West sophomore Daniela Polencheck.
